WHAT TO DO

Struggling to do up your jeans? Try ‘bicycle crunches’, says celebrity personal trainer Nadya Fairweather (u-shape.co.uk).

Lie on your back and imagine your feet are on pedals. Alternate extending each leg as if you are riding a bike. The lower your feet are, the harder it is. Get a rhythm going.

Now lift your head off the mat, hands at your temples, elbows wide. Aim left shoulder to right knee, then right shoulder to left knee.

Your upper back and shoulder should come off the mat with each ‘pedal’. Keep your chin up. Aim for 30 seconds of action, 15 seconds rest. Do five sets.

WHAT TO EAT

To help blitz your muffin top, nutritionist Amanda Hamilton (amandahamilton.com) suggests cutting down on sugar-rich foods.

Try home-made acai bowls. Acai is a fruit that scores low on the GI index and can help to curb sweet cravings. It is also rich in anthocyanins, plant compounds that act as antioxidants in the body.

It’s available as a frozen pulp that you can blend with a little banana and some protein-rich plain yoghurt.

If you find bread too tempting, try German-style rye bread. It will keep you fuller for longer and goes well with smoked salmon.

The essential fats in salmon are linked to reduced risk of metabolic syndrome, which causes weight gain around the belly.
