Andy Garcia signs on to star in and executive produce Cuban-American remake of Father of the Bride

Andy Garcia has signed on to put a new twist on a familiar story, a Cuban-American remake of Father of the Bride.

The 64-year-old actor has come aboard to star in and executive produce the project, which hails from Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Gabe Alazraki (Club de Cuervos) has been set to direct, with Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner producing through Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B.

Garcia will portray the title character, a father trying to come to terms with his daughter tying the knot. 

This story will be told through the particular lens of a sprawling Cuban-American family and its varying relationship dynamics.

Alazraki will direct from a screenplay written by Matt Lopez (Race to Witch Mountain, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice).

‘I’m very excited to join The Father of the Bride, a beloved film that has brought so much joy to so many over the years and to represent my Cuban culture and heritage in this story,’ Garcia said in a statement.

‘I commend Warner Bros. for their foresight and celebrate this opportunity they have created,’ he added.

The Father of the Bride franchise spans more than 70 years, starting with the 1949 satirical novel written by Edward Streeter.

Spencer Tracy played the title character in the 1950 film adaptation, which also starred Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Bennett.  

The film spawned a 1951 sequel entitled Father’s Little Dividend, with Tracy, Taylor and Bennett all returning.

The franchise was revived 40 years later with Steve Martin’s Father of the Bride remake, which was a hit at the box office with $89 million in 1991.

Martin returned for the 1995 sequel Father of the Bride Part II, along with Diane Keaton and Martin Short.

They all also returned last year for the quarantine short film Father of the Bride Part 3(ish), where the family reunited over a Zoom call.

The short film was released on Netflix, which acted as a fundraiser as well for the World Central Kitchen, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
