Henry Cavill confirms he suffered a hamstring injury while filming The Witcher’s second season

Henry Cavill has confirmed he sustained a hamstring injury while filming The Witcher’s second season.

The actor, 37,  took to Instagram on Thursday to give fans an update on his health, explaining that he hurt his hamstring prior to the UK’s third lockdown.

Over the past few months, Henry has been busy on set shooting for the Netflix hit’s forthcoming season, and it was reported in December that he had hurt his leg during a scene while working from 20ft in the air.

Getting better: Henry Cavill confirmed on Thursday that he suffered a hamstring injury while filming The Witcher’s second season as he took ‘major step’ in his recovery by going for a jog

Sharing a selfie where he wore a blue camouflage-print face mask after a jog, he said the exercise was a ‘major step’ in his recovery.

He explained to fans: ‘We are in lockdown here the UK so I’m using my once a day outdoor exercise to go for my first jog since my hamstring injury! (More on that another time).

‘It wasn’t fast, and it certainly was far, but it has been a major step in my recovery, and my first step to getting back into the groove after a Christmas that may have involved more than a few cups of mulled wine, and an exceptionally fat Turkey.’

Reports from The Sun in December claimed Henry had been wearing a safety harness while working at a height of 20ft when the injury occurred.

Although Henry ‘did not require an ambulance’, shooting for the upcoming show was said to have been delayed as he ‘can’t walk properly’ and has been told to rest.

A source told the publication: ‘The filming has been hit because of what happened to Henry. He was on an assault course and injured his leg.

‘He just suddenly pulled up and was clearly in a lot of pain. It wasn’t clear if an object had hit his leg or it was some sort of hamstring or muscle injury.

‘It wasn’t bad enough to need an ambulance but it’s messed up the filming schedule as he can’t walk properly.’

They added that the star, who also plays Superman, would not be able to move very well while wearing his heavy costume of armour.

It is thought that the scene, which was filming 20ft in the trees, contained an action sequence with axes.

MailOnline contacted a representative for Netflix for comment at the time.

The Witcher follows the journey of its eponymous character Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster hunter who travels across The Continent on his quest to slay monstrous beasts.

At the end of season one Geralt finally united with Ciri, he became her warden by the Law Of Surprise after saving her father’s life before she was born, though actress Freya Allen was not seen on set.

In August fans were delighted after The Witcher resumed production for its second series.

Filming on the Netflix fantasy drama had to be put on hold earlier in the year due to the global pandemic, but Stephen Surjik, who directed two episodes of the first season, told fans the show was up and running again.

Sharing a snap on Instagram from set, he said: ‘It’s T minus 3 min to ignition and lift off for our second run at Witcher S2. Everyone is being cautious but spirits are high.’

He said the cast and crew are having to maintain social distance on set amid the new restrictions.

The release date for the highly-anticipated second series is not yet known, but Netflix have revealed that a limited six-part spin off series called Blood Origin was also in the works.

Delays: Filming had previously had to be postponed earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, with production resuming in August last year
