  • The carpet roll on top of the Peugeot van was covering part of the windscreen
  • He was stopped by traffic officers on the M56, near Warrington, Cheshire
  • His excuse to officers was that the capet roll ‘wasn’t like that when he set off’
  • Driver was slapped with a roadworthiness penalty by police after the incident

A reckless driver was stopped by traffic police after a roll of carpet loaded on top of his van got so damp it sagged and blocked his windcreen. 

He had the carpet on top of his Peugeot van as he drove along the M56, near Warrington, Cheshire.

Police pulled over the motorist on the motorway in heavy rain with his view of the road half obscured by the slumped load. 

He wasslapped with a PG9 – a roadworthiness penalty – by traffic officers from Greater Manchester Police. 

But not before the driver tried to argue with officers that the load was not hindering his view when he set off.

Greater Manchester Police traffic officers shared details of the incident on their social media pages. 

The force tweeted: ‘This vehicle was seen driving along M56 in the pouring down rain.

‘Load carried not only presented a danger to others but reduced the drivers view of the road ahead.

‘Driver stated: “It wasn’t like that when I set off.” PG9 issued and driver reported North West Motorway Police.’

The post was met with good humour on social media with many popping jokes about the driver’s mishap. 

Local Matt Hart joked: ‘At least he didn’t floor it.’

Another – called Norman – said: ‘Did you roll out the carpet for him?’

Barbaba Ward fumed: ‘How ridiculous is that, how on earth could he see to drive?’

Steve Clark added: ‘Wouldn’t like to have that carpet fitted in the house now.’

Imran Sabir said: ‘He should have loaded in sideways. Simples.’
