Kate Garraway shares heartbreaking images of her husband Derek Draper, 53, fighting for his life with Covid in hospital – a year after being admitted to ICU

Kate Garraway has shared shocking home shot footage of her husband Derek Draper fighting for his life in hospital a year after contracting Covid.

The Good Morning Britain presenter can be seen looking emotional as she watches her 53-year-old husband in his hospital bed.

In the first clip of a new ITV documentary, Finding Derek, Miss Garraway, 53, says: ‘Derek is the sickest person the team of doctors have treated this year.’

‘Is he going to be able to come back or will he be alive but no longer the person he was?’

The screen goes black as a message reads: ‘One year later, Derek is still in hospital.’

Derek was put into an induced coma nearly a year ago after catching the virus and remains in intensive care.

Miss Garraway recently revealed she had been wrongly told her husband, a former Labour political advisor, may have died. She said he has lost eight stone in his health battle.

The presenter said the ‘worst moment’ had come when they said he could be ‘locked in for ever’.

She admitted she did not know if he would have ‘any kind of life again’ and his heart had stopped ‘more than once’.

It is claimed that for her to take on a deputy power of attorney there would have to be an assessment of whether his condition is classed as a coma.

‘Is he in a position to make a decision or not? Before Christmas, I felt like he did understand,’ Miss Garraway told The Sunday Times.

‘But now I feel like he’s slipped back and I don’t really know what he believes, or feels.’

She added: ‘I haven’t really got my head around the legal situation.’

Miss Garraway said they had discussed the whole issue of power of attorney previously but ‘it isn’t logged anywhere’ or she cannot find it.

She said: ‘We had a whole conversation and Derek said we have to appoint power of attorney in case anything happens.

‘He said I’d be his. And I’m sure I made some kind of joke, saying, ‘Well, you’re not being mine.’ And we were laughing and having all these sorts of jokes. So I know we’ve had that conversation.

‘But it isn’t logged anywhere. Or if it is, I can’t find it.’

Miss Garraway has previously revealed she has been left unable to access their joint savings and her husband’s bank and credit cards while he has been in hospital.

She is also said not to able to legally see his medical notes.
