Glenn Close opens up about not yet winning an Oscar after being nominated a whopping SEVEN times

When it comes to powerhouse actresses, few women come to mind more than a Glenn Close.

The Hollywood legend, 73, recently appeared on Variety’s Actors On Actors series with Pete Davidson to talk about her career.

During their interview, Pete made the astute observation that it’s rather strange the acclaimed star has yet to win an Academy Award, in spite of being nominated a total of seven times so far over her long and storied tenure as a film star.

Always the bridesmaid: Glenn Close recently appeared on Variety’s Actors On Actors series with Pete Davidson to talk about her career… and multiple Oscar snubs

‘What can we do to get you an Oscar?’ Davidson asked cheekily. ‘We have to get the Internet to help, because you deserve seven!’

‘Is it better to be wheeled out in a wheelchair and get the lifetime achievement award?’ Glenn reflected.

‘You don’t have to make a speech!’ she added with a laugh.

Ever an Oscars darling, Close received her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1983 for The World According to Garp, for one of her first-ever featured roles.

Just one year later, the talented star was nominated again for her standout performance in the ensemble drama The Big Chill, and kept the streak going with her third nod in as many years in 1985 for The Natural.

However most of Glenn‘s fans would agree that the role for which she most deserved Oscar gold came in 1987, when she played the troubled Alex Forrest in Adrian Lynn’s superior and taut thriller Fatal Attraction.

Close has been quite vocal over the years about how much work she put into the role of Alex, including meeting with psychiatrists, and has said she ‘loved’ the character and chose to play her as ‘someone in distress’ as opposed to a simple monster.

And that work shows in the film, which tells the story of a brief extramarital love affair gone very, very wrong when the ‘other woman’ (Close) refuses to be cast aside.

Like some of the best Hitchcock films, Fatal Attraction is one of those movies that doesn’t let up and gets under viewers’ skin, becoming something of a cultural touchpoint since its release over 30 years ago.

And while Cher took home the Best Actress Oscar that year for her winsome performance in Moonstruck, those in Glenn’s camp have felt she’s been somewhat shortchanged by the Academy ever since.

‘It’s beyond me. I don’t know what to say about that,’ Glenn remarked during her chat with Pete.

And naturally, she chose to focus about what was truly important as an actor: the work.

‘I just have to keep doing what’s good. You’re fulfilled by your work, and that’s the process to me. It’s what feeds my soul, but it really is nice when other people like it,’ she allowed.

To cap it off, the 101 Dalmatians star mused, ‘It might be cool to never get one.

‘I wouldn’t mind being wheeled out when I’m old and drooling [for the lifetime achievement award], and I have a gray wig to cover my bald head.’

After Fatal Attraction, Glenn was nominated again in 1989 for her role of the vain Marquise de Merteuil in the excellent Dangerous Liaisons.

More excellent work: Other nominations over the years have included recognition for Glenn's leading role in 2011's Albert Nobbs; seen here with Mia Wasikowska and Aaron Johnson

And in the last decade, she’s received her sixth and seventh nominations, for 2011’s period piece focusing on trans characters Albert Nobbs, and most recently for 2017′s The Wife.

Currently, Close is receiving considerable buzz for her role opposite Amy Adams in Hillbilly Elegy on Netflix.

And while she’s surely hoping for further recognition from the Academy ahead of nominations being announced, Glenn can rest assured that she’ll be in phenomenal company in case she never wins Oscar gold.

Just some of the legendary screen sirens never to have clinched an Academy Award include Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Lauren Bacall, along with living contemporaries Sigourney Weaver and Annette Benning.
