Aubrey Plaza joins Jason Statham in upcoming American-British spy thriller directed by Guy Ritchie

Aubrey Plaza has been cast to co-star with Jason Statham in an upcoming thriller directed by Guy Ritchie.

The 36-year-old actress will portray a CIA high-tech expert opposite Statham, 53, as an action-oriented MI6 agent, according to an article Wednesday by Deadline.

A global intelligence alliance paired the duo together to prevent the sale of a deadly new weapons technology that could disrupt the world order and the film follows their globe-trotting mission.

Ritchie, 52, will direct and produce the untitled thriller formerly known as Five Eyes from a screenplay by Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies.

The thriller was purchased at the TIFF Virtual sales room with Miramax producing and financing and STX handling distribution.

STXfilmms recently worked with Ritchie on The Gentlemen, which was written by Atkinson and Davies.

The Gentlemen was released in January starring Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Marsan, Colin Farrell, and Hugh Grant.

The action comedy was written, directed and produced by Ritchie and earned $115 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $22 million.

The Gentlemen was praised by critics as a return to form for Ritchie.

Plaza also has received critical acclaim for her role in the romantic comedy Happiest Season that was released in November on Hulu.

She also was praised in a new review of her movie Black Bear with the Associated Press writing, ‘She’s been excellent before as a motivated teen in ‘The To Do List’ and an empathetic social media stalker in ‘Ingrid Goes West’ but the bigger studio comedies have largely failed her. Something finally clicked into place, though, and she has proven that she is on another level.’

Black Bear premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival and is scheduled for release in theaters and digitally Friday.

Plaza is best known for her starring role as April Ludgate on the sitcom Parks and Recreation that aired from 2009 to 2015 on NBC.
