People have been moved to tears after reading letters written by children to Santa ahead of Christmas with heartbreaking requests.

PhD student Hilary Agro, from Toronto, took to Twitter to share a collection of the hand-written notes that had been uploaded by America’s USPS Operation Santa.

Among the letters included one child pleading for a new electric wheelchair for Christmas, while many others simply asked for ‘kindness’ and ‘hugs’ for others.

Social media users were left bawling over the emotional letters, with one commenting: ‘Too late I’m already crying! These poor kids, man… If I could give them the whole world I would…’

Uploading the letters on Twitter, Hilary commented: ‘I am in shambles. We live in the cruelest society.’

‘I should have put a warning honestly, don’t read these if you don’t want to cry right where you’re sitting.’

One of the letters read: ‘Dear Santa, how are you and your reindeer?

‘It must be cool riding a sled in the sky! My name is Kayla and I am 11 years old. This year for Christmas I would really like a couch that is also a bed.

‘The reason I would like a couch with a bed is because I have an apartment that only had 1 room.

‘My parents sleep in the living room on the couch and they always wake up with back pain. My dad works a lot so his back pain stresses him out.

‘That’s all I want for Christmas. Have a happy Christmas Santa!’

Another said: ‘I want other kids to be nice to each other (including me) and to have talent and to be independent and strong, brave, smart and designed for greatness and to be a leader, health, cool human beings. Merry Christmas.’

And a third child asked: ‘Dear Santa, I want one thing. I’ve been a good girl and I want to ask you if you please get me a new power wheelchair.

‘My wheelchair is very old and it does not want to work. I am very sad please Santa bring me a power wheelchair.’

Hundreds of other letters registered in the system included requests for people to be nice to each other as well as help for those less fortunate in society.

Social media users quickly flooded Hilary’s post with an emotional outpouring of support.
