Melissa McCarthy’s terrifying medical emergency in Australia

Melissa McCarthy has been staying in Byron Bay with her family over the past few months, while filming the new Hulu series Nine Perfect Strangers.

And while the 50-year-old actress has been enjoying her time in the northern NSW coastal town, she recently suffered a terrifying medical emergency.

Appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last week, the Bridesmaids star revealed she’d suffered an allergic reaction after something bit her while she was sleeping.

‘Something bit me and 92 per cent of my body blew up in a way that I didn’t know was possible,’ she said.

‘I carry an EpiPen now because nobody knows [what it was]… it could be anything!’ 

Melissa explained that as a result of the bite, which was from either an animal or insect, her lip swelled to ‘four times’ its usual size. 

‘It got me during the night. My lip was about four times the size. I kept trying to say, “I think something’s wrong,”‘ she said, adding that her words came out as gibberish.

Melissa then revealed that her husband, Ben Falcone, had a hilarious first reaction to seeing her swollen lips.

‘His first response was, “Get away from me – because what if it’s contagious?”‘ she joked.

Melissa is in Australia filming the upcoming TV series Nine Perfect Strangers, which is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty.

The $100million production is being filmed in Byron Bay and other parts of NSW.

The series will tell the story of nine stressed-out urbanites who escape to a wellness retreat run by Nicole Kidman’s character.

Filming kicked off in August and is expected to run for approximately 19 weeks.
