CCTV footage has captured the ‘appalling’ moment a young child pinched property from outside a house – after appearing to be spurred on by a mother pushing a pram.

The footage – recorded from the Cobridge property – shows the woman and child walking along Cobridge Road.

The child – who had been pushing a bike – is then seen to approach the house and take a strip of elastic to the woman before returning to the property and fleeing with a mobility scooter cover.

Now Staffordshire Police  have been called in after disabled Dawn Walton returned from a dental appointment to discover the £30 cover missing on November 3.

The 61-year-old said: ‘I’ve got fencing at the front and what I did was weave the cover in and out of the fence to secure it. Then when I came back I thought where has my cover gone?

‘It started pouring with rain and I had to rush around trying to find something to cover my scooter up with because they don’t deal with the weather.

‘If water gets in the electrics then it doesn’t do it any good.

‘I managed to get a cover on and then I thought I’d pull my CCTV footage up and find out if it had blown away.’

Dawn believes the cover was taken by a mother and her ‘seven-year-old daughter’.

She added: ‘This unsavoury woman is walking a pram up the road and she stops where the entrance to our parking is and her daughter is pushing a little push bike 20 to 30 yards in front of her mum.

‘It appears to me that the mother tells her daughter to come back because she has seen that cover. I’m guessing her daughter must have only been about seven.

‘The girl came down and must have caught sight of the elastic. She was trying to attract the attention of her mother to say do you want this as well?

‘She then ran up the car park waving this elastic about. Her mother took the elastic off her and put it underneath the pram. She sent her back down to get the cover and off they toddled with the cover.’

Owner Dawn Walton, 61, said the theft has left her 'gobsmacked' and is appealing for help

The theft has left Dawn ‘gobsmacked’.

She added: ‘The role model of the mother – in sending a child to steal things – is appalling.

‘I initially wanted to go on my scooter to see if I could find them but it was throwing it down and I couldn’t do it.

‘I am devastated because she sent the child down to pinch things.’

Police are appealing for witnesses following the theft.

A police spokesman said: ‘A scooter cover worth approximately £30 was stolen from a car park on Cobridge Road.’

Witnesses should call the police on 101, quoting incident number 291 of November 3.
