Susanna Reid reveals she gained a stone during first lockdown

Susanna Reid has revealed she gained a stone during the first lockdown and fears putting on more weight amid the latest restrictions.

The presenter, 49, who dropped a stone and a half in 2018, spoke about her weight gain during a chat with Body Coach star Joe Wicks, 35, on Tuesday’s episode of Good Morning Britain.

The star said she was struggling to keep in a healthy mindset amid the second national lockdown, saying: ‘I’m going to be battling with the lockdown stone, it went on during lockdown one. I really don’t want another one going on during lockdown two.

‘What are the tips you’ve got for trying to stay healthy and what you put into your body as well?’

Joe responded: ‘The motivation I always say to people isn’t going to be at the start of the workout it is going to be at the end of it.

‘It comes down to keeping it simple with the food. Home cooked food, avoiding takeaways, things like drinking wine and cheese that all adds up.

‘Keep moving, go for walks and exercise because if you are sedentary and you consume all this extra energy it has nowhere else to go then become body fat.’

Susanna has openly documented her weight loss journey after learning in 2018 that her weight meant she was at the top end of her BMI.

Susanna previously revealed that she’d managed to drop a stone and a half after quitting booze and cutting down on her snacking.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly in March last year she said: ‘I went to a doctor because I just wanted to ask him about skin problems and he said I recommend two things…

‘One is you stop drinking or cut down on drinking and one is you lose some weight because you are at the top end of your BMI…

‘It can creep up without noticing, I cut out snacking, I found waking up so early in the morning and you’re in energy deficit and all your body can think it have toast have biscuits and you can pile it on really.’

Susanna’s chat with Joe comes after she got very excited at the prospect of a COVID-19 vaccine on the show.

Discussing the news of the Pfizer breakthrough – which saw a vaccine with 90 per cent efficiency announced on Monday – Susanna  faked an orgasm live on Good Morning Britain.

Mimicking Meg Ryan’s famous scene in When Harry Met Sally, she screamed: ‘Yes yes YES!’

Surrounded by men at the time, the likes of co-host Piers Morgan and Dr Hilary Jones were left red-faced.

They were discussing Oxford professor Sir John Bell’s comment on the vaccine.

He had appeared on BBC Radio 4’s The World At One following the breakthrough news on Monday, asked whether the UK could be back to normal life by spring.

‘Yes, yes yes!’ was his reply, prompting Susanna’s impression, with Piers branding her ‘frisky’.

‘Oh blimey! Are you alright Susanna?’ flustered Piers asked.

In the scene from the 1989 film, Meg Ryan’s Sally sits down to dinner opposite Billy Crystal’s Harry and demonstrates how easy it is for a woman to fake pleasure.

Screaming at the top of her lungs, she performs a lengthy routine featuring convincing orgasmic sounds.

Asked if it’s really the big breakthrough, Sir John said: ‘This is a pretty substantial step. Not only have they got a vaccine that works, it’s working at a much higher level than most of us thought a vaccine would work at.

‘This was the breakthrough we needed to really make a difference.’

Asked about his confidence that we’ll be back to normal by spring and what that will look like he said: ‘First thing that’s going to happen is this has to be approved by regulators both by the US and here. That, based on the data I’ve seen, should be pretty straight forward.

‘That will be ready for regulators to look at next week as I understand it. The regulators should turn it around pretty quickly – I would have thought it would take a week at most to give it the nod.’

He continued: ‘Then it’s really a question of getting the vaccine that’s been produced already and get it out so people can start being vaccinated. This vaccine has an issue, that is it has to be transported at a very low temp -80 degrees… that it seems to me is one of the significant issues we’re going to have to overcome. But compared to inventing a vaccine, that’s not such a complicated problem.

‘I should also say that because this vaccine has been successful, it’s extremely likely the other vaccines that showed the same kind of ability to mount immune responses will also be successful. There’s at least two of those that we’ll be able to have a look at some time over the next few weeks – one is the Moderna vaccine, the other is the AstraZeneca vaccine. If they play as well then we’ll have two or three vaccines.’

The expert described the vaccine as fooling cells into producing a viral protein which the immune system reacts to, with Piers  remarking that the vaccine was a ‘James Bond of vaccines – it’s duplicitous, sneaky, incredibly ruthless and annihilates the enemy just when it thinks it’s got Bond where it wants him’.

Sir John responded: ‘That’s exactly the right description actually. And the other good news is it’s very fast. You can make these things very quickly. All you need is a string of RNA. You can make that in no time at all. It holds real promise for future pandemics as well.’
