James Blunt reveals super-fan demanded You’re Beautiful royalties after claiming he was stalking HER

‘It was quite scary’: James Blunt reveals a super-fan demanded You’re Beautiful royalties after claiming she was the woman in the song and he was stalking HER

James Blunt has revealed how a super-fan once demanded he paid her royalties from hit song You’re Beautiful after claiming she was being stalked by the singer.

The musician, 46, explained how the American woman had alleged that she was the woman who he sings about seeing on the subway in his popular 2005 tune.

Speaking with The Sun, James said: ‘It was quite scary. She’s pretty fervent that she’s the woman for me from the subway.

‘She sent me a detailed 50-page document about how I’ve been stalking her, and that’s a little frightening.

‘I had to point out I wasn’t on the subway in 1984, which is when she claimed she saw me… I would have been ten years old, and the first time I visited the States was in 2002. So that was all a bit strange.’

In his hit single, which sold more than 4m copies after being released in 2005, James sings about spotting an ‘angel’ who ‘smiled at him on the subway’ in the first verse.

James told the publication that because he could prove the woman, whose name is not known, was not the person in his hit no further legal action was needed.

However James, who is releasing his book How To Be A Complete And Utter Blunt on Thursday, also revealed that he’s had a few stalkers of his own during his successful music career.

He explained that he doesn’t often talk about them because at times they’ve given him some ‘wonderful gifts’.

Giving an example, the father-of-two detailed a box which looks like an ‘airline pilot’s flight case’ that one fan gave him.

He said that the inside was covered with items which linked to his life, such as past books he’s had to read of albums he’s listened too over the years.

Elsewhere in the interview, James discussed how the pandemic has impacted his pub in west London, The Fox and Pheasant, and family life.

James said that although he’s had concerns and not been able to work, he knows that it’s not the ‘big names’ who are suffering.

He also praised the NHS for their incredible work during the pandemic and said that his own father Charles is shielding after having a kidney transplant.

Back in June, the singer confirmed his father is ‘looking well’ following his kidney transplant in January.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain he said: ‘My father, Charles Blount, was given a kidney by a cousin called Charles Blount. I haven’t seen him since January. He’s been in isolation. My mother is going slightly mad but he’s looking well.’

James has been self-isolating at his house in Ibiza throughout the pandemic and joked: ‘I did survive lockdown with my mother in law for 68 days, 11 hours and 36 minutes, I’m awaiting that medal.’

He also confirmed he will have a new album out this year and joked the record would make 2020 even worse than it already has been.

He said: ‘This apocalyptic year wouldn’t be complete without a James Blunt album. It’s a collection of really miserable songs.’

James’ new album will include the song The Greatest is in praise of frontline workers with proceeds from the single going to the NHS and the World Health Organisation.
