‘I now work from home with my own hologram’: Emily Maitlis jokes after appearing to have NO LEGS on BBC’s Newsnight leaving viewers baffled

BBC presenter Emily Maitlis appeared to lose her legs during Newsnight yesterday after standing in front of a black background while wearing dark tights and shoes.
Viewers joked that the 50-year-old journalist was being ‘brought to you by virtual reality’ while another said she was ‘arrested for being legless in a tier two area’.
Maitlis, who earns up to £375,000 a year, made light of the incident later on by tweeting: ‘I now work from home with my own hologram. Perfect for quarantine.’
It comes after Newsnight moved on October 5 into a new studio at Broadcasting House, which has views of London’s Regent Street and is shared with BBC Persian.

The error is believed to have happened when the camera could not pick up the colour of Maitlis’s tights because they were too similar to the dark background.

Among those joking about the mistake was actor David Schneider, who tweeted: ‘As if 2020 wasn’t already bad enough, Emily Maitlis has been robbed of her legs.’
Another Twitter user posted a video of it, saying: ‘Newsnight goes to Liverpool and Emily Maitlis gets her legs nicked. Just as well she left the car at home.
‘Some people never learn. She was later arrested for being legless in a tier two area.’
A third said it was ‘no more fitting a metaphor for the Government post-Brexit’, while a fourth added: ‘Help us O BBC Kenobi, you’re our only hope’.
Another tweeted: ‘Tonight, Emily Maitlis, brought to you by virtual reality. Later Newsnight interviews Darth Maul.’
Last night’s Newsnight featured interviews on the latest Covid-19 situation with Sage scientist Sir Mark Walport and Oxford University scientist Professor Carl Heneghan.
Also appearing on the programme were Conservative MP Andrew Mitchell, Labour MP Justin Madders, PR expert Lynne Franks and author Sarfraz Manzoor.
A BBC spokesman declined to comment when contacted by MailOnline today.
