The Others starring Nicole Kidman gets a new remake through Universal Pictures and Sentient Entertainment
Universal Pictures and Sentient Entertainment are teaming up to remake the beloved 2001 thriller The Others.
The studio optioned the rights to the original film from Sentient, which had obtained the rights to the film in a competitive bidding situation in April, via Deadline.
The Others was one of the biggest surprise hits at the box office in the summer of 2001, earning $96.5 million domestic and $209.9 million worldwide from just a $17 million budget.

The Others centered on Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman), a mother who lives in an old house in 1945, immediately after the end of World War II.
She lives with her two children (Alakina Mann and James Bradley), who have a rare disease characterized by photosensitivity to light
They all live in this darkened old house with a trio of servants, as Grace starts to believe the house is occupied by ‘others,’ i.e. ghosts.

The film also stars Fionnula Flanagan, Christopher Eccleston and Eric Sykes, written and directed by Alejandro Amenabar (The Sea Inside, Agora, Regression).
The Others, much like M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense two years earlier, was a surprise box office hit with a twist that fans had fans talking.
There is no word if Alejandro Amenabar will be involved with the remake, though studio execs are currently meeting with writers to take on the project.

Sentient acquired the remake rights from FilmSharks’ subsidiary The Remake Company and Video Mercury’s Enrique Cerezo, who obtained the rights when he obtained Sogecine, previously owned by StudioCanal.
The report from April indicated that, ‘the plan was to modernize and reinvent the story’ though no plot specifics were given.
The film became the first non-Spanish-language film to win Best Film at Spain’s Goya Awards, taking home seven Goyas including Best Director for Amenabar, who was raised in Madrid.

The remake will be produced by Sentient’s Renee Tab and Christopher Tuffin, alongside Aliwen Entertainment’s Lucas Akoskin.
Cerezo will executive produce alongside Rud and Miller Way’s Michael and Jeeny Miller.
Universal’s SVP Production Sara Scott will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
