Rod Stewart reveals he has to undergo an ankle operation after having knee replacement surgery

‘I am suffering’: Rod Stewart reveals he has to undergo an ankle operation after having knee replacement surgery earlier this year

Sir Rod Stewart has revealed he is set to go under the knife once more as he has surgery to fix his ankle.

The rock star, 75, had knee replacement surgery in January and now needs his ankle to be fused after he was recently left struggling to walk.

Speaking to The Mirror, he said: ‘First of all it was my knee as I played football all my life. I am suffering for it now. My knee got fixed with a replacement and then the ankle did not know what was going on.

‘It was crooked. So I have had to have an ankle fusion. So when this is all done I should have a nice straight leg and I should be able to run.

My leg has been caused by playing on awful pitches in Los Angeles. They are bone dry.’

Prior to the coronavirus lockdown, Rod had returned to performing and was preparing for a gruelling touring schedule.

In February, Rod’s wife Penny Lancaster, 49, told how he had recently performed two private shows in Florida and said his knee was better than ever before.

She added: ‘He said he was running sideways and it has all been sorted. He is like a masterclass of knee replacement – there is no stopping him.’

Following his ankle operation, Rod is planning on hitting the road with several shows in the US next summer followed by an Australian tour in March and April 2022.

Back in January, Penny had kept fans updated with Rod’s progress and shared a snap of the Maggie May hit-maker dressed in a robe, while celebrating his 75th birthday.

‘Roddy is doing remarkably well after his knee replacement surgery on Tuesday (so well that the naughty boy keeps trying to walk with out his crutches).

‘Luckily he is being discharged today to celebrate his 75th tonight and home this weekend to see the boys play football,’ she wrote.

In November last year, Rod told BBC Radio 2 that he was having the operation after his knee had ‘packed up’ following years of playing football.

The Celtic fan said: ‘It is from football over the years but I will be OK. I will be fine.’

Rod has previously spoken about injuring his knee during the sport and told the Daily Record: ‘I am very careful now. I don’t volley them straight out. I kick them in the air so people can see them coming down.

‘I don’t play football now as my right knee has packed up. So no more competitive football for me as I can’t go sideways on my knee.’

Rod married wife Penny back in 2007 and the couple share sons Alastair, 14, and Aiden, nine.

Rod is also dad to six other children; sons Sean, 39, and Liam, 25, and daughters Kimberly, 40, Ruby, 32, Renee, 27 and Sarah Streeter, 57.
