John Terry is locked in a battle with neighbours over plans to build pool-side party and drinks area

John Terry has been caught in a battle with his neighbours over plans to build a pool-side party and drinks area at his £4.35million Surrey mansion.

The former England captain, 39, and his wife Toni, 38, moved into the plush 18th century, seven-bedroom property in July last year.

The couple recently sought permission to add an outdoor party space complete with covered seating and a bar near the pool, and to replace the current triple garage with a new version.

Terry also plans to add a staff quarters to the renovated garage, which would be expanded to house his car collection – including a Ferrari 275 GTB and a £2 million Enzo.

The former Chelsea centre-back has been met with stern opposition from neighbours in Cobham, Surrey, who claim the bar would be a noise nuisance all year round.

Imogen Jamieson wrote to Guildford Council’s planning officer on behalf of Ockham Parish Council, accusing Terry of ‘inappropriate and excessive development particularly with the additional proposed outdoor seating area.’

‘The nature of swimming pool activity with a covered outdoor seating with a bar means there are likely to be noise nuisance issues preventing residents from having peaceful enjoyment of their properties,’ she said.

‘The provision of a heating source also enables this space to be used year round which would provide the neighbours with no respite from noise nuisance throughout the year.

‘Additionally, the size of this structure leads to further concerns of development creep.’

She added that the house has been ‘significantly altered and increased’ since the couple moved to the property in July last year.

In February, Terry was given the green light to bulldoze the conservatory at his home and replace it with a gym and a lounge.

Locals had branded the planning proposals ‘inappropriate’ and a violation of the green belt, but Guildford Council gave Terry the go ahead.

In her letter, Ms Jamieson continued: ‘The house has been significantly altered and increased and we believe this latest application constitutes inappropriate and excessive development particularly with the additional proposed outdoor seating area.’

David Scotland has also objected to the former England and Chelsea star’s proposals.

He said: ‘The proposed staff accommodation above the applicants’ new garage would create a third residential unit which would clearly breach the existing order.

‘Whilst I sympathise with the new owners who are greatly improving the house, I have to object to this application.’

Terry wants to replace the current garage with a larger one to house his car collection, which includes a Ferrari 275 GTB and a £2 million Enzo.

The footballer has also been spotted cycling recently, and the plans say the garage would be home to his bikes.

The plans say: ‘The proposed development comprises a detached triple garage with accommodation for ancillary domestic staff within the roof space above to replace, and broadly in the same position as, an existing detached triple garage.

‘And a single-storey covered outdoor seating area – open to each of its four sides – adjacent to the outdoor pool area, following the demolition of the existing garage and a single-storey domestic storage outbuilding.’

The updated garage would be 111 metres squared, with 460 metres of volume.

The plans explain: ‘The existing garage is too small to easily accommodate larger vehicles, modern day 4×4’s and SUVs and storage of cycles.

‘The materials for the existing buildings are not sympathetic and do not match the main house.

‘The proposed development represents an attractive and well-proportioned building which will use traditional materials that match the existing main house and therefore represents an enhancement compared to the existing buildings.

‘The outdoor covering seating area is a simple open-sided structure with four timber posts at each corner supporting a pitched roof with a low brick wall along the rear side and a brick chimney.’

His application goes on to claim that his neighbours’ privacy will not be infringed upon.

It adds: ‘The replacement garage and covered outdoor seating area are more than 25 metres from the nearest neighbouring houses to the south-east.

‘There are no windows proposed in the rear or side elevations of the garage and thus there would be no overlooking or loss of privacy to the neighbouring properties.’

Terry, who is now Aston Villa assistant coach, bought the plush pad last year for £4.35million.

The impressive house is set in eight acres of land, just a stone’s throw away from his old club Chelsea’s training ground in Cobham.

It features a library, stables, swimming pool and tennis court – but Terry and his wife are still keen on extending it more.

The property is Terry’s fifth in the area after owning four others on the nearby Crown Estate in Oxshott, one of Britain’s most expensive areas to live.

Firstly, in 2002, Terry purchased a six-bed family pad in 2013 before selling it for £5million in 2013.

He then acquired golfer Colin Montgomerie’s house for £6.5 million in 2014 which boasts a two-bed staff annexe, four reception rooms and six-bathrooms.

Terry and the family lived here for several years, however moved out after the house was burgled while they were on a skiing holiday.

The Chelsea legend is currently trying to sell this house, but has had to cut half a million pounds off the asking price to try and find a buyer.

Terry also built a nine-bedroom white mansion nearby in 2011 – which he intended to live in with Toni and twin children.

However, before they had the chance to move in, they received an out of the blue offer for £16million from Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Sultan of Oman.

He also bought another nearby property for £4.5million in 2017, and lodged plans to demolish it and build two luxury houses in its place.
