Rachel Weisz to portray dual role on TV originally played by Jeremy Irons in 1988 film Dead Ringers

Rachel Weisz will take on a dual role originally portrayed by Jeremy Irons in a TV adaptation of the 1988 psychological thriller movie Dead Ringers.

The 50-year-old actress will star and also executive produce the upcoming project that was picked up by Amazon in a straight-to-series order, according to an article Tuesday by Entertainment Weekly.

The original film directed by body horror master David Cronenberg, 77, starred Irons, 71, as twins and gynecologists Elliot and Beverly Mantle who have a relationship with the same woman.

Weisz will play the Mantle twins in the first regular television role for the Oscar-winning actress.

The London native won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the 2005 thriller The Constant Gardener.

The Amazon series will follow the twins as they challenge conventional practices in an effort to bring women’s health care to the forefront while sharing everything, including lovers and drugs.

The series will be written by Alice Birch who also will serve as an executive producer along with Weisz.

Amazon will produce the show along with Annapurna, the studio behind Vice and Booksmart.

‘I am so lucky to have such brilliant partners in Annapurna and Amazon Studios, and I’m thrilled to be collaborating with the exceptionally talented Alice Birch,’ Weisz said in a statement.

She added: ‘I can’t wait to go on this journey with all of them.’

Weisz also was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Lady Sarah in the 2018 black comedy The Favourite.

The Black Widow actress has been married since 2011 to actor Daniel Craig, 52, and they have a daughter together who was born in 2018.

Weisz also has 14-year-old son Henry Aronofsky with her ex-fiance Darren Aronofsky, 51.
