Katy Perry doubles down on her support for Ellen DeGeneres during ‘toxic’ workplace scandal

She spoke out earlier this month in support of beleaguered chat show host Ellen DeGeneres.

And on a new interview published Wednesday, Katy Perry doubled down on her tweet backing the comedienne who has been accused of allowing a ‘toxic environment’ to exist on her NBC daytime show.

‘I started that tweet off not undermining anyone else’s experience,’ the pop star, 35, told the LA Times.

‘I wanted to only speak from my own experience. I have over 100 million people that follow me on Twitter, so not everyone is going to agree with me. And I’m not here to make everyone agree with me.’

In backing the chat show host, she said: 'I'm not here to make everyone agree with me''

DeGeneres, 62, is currently facing an investigation over allegations of racism, bullying and fostering a ‘toxic environment’ behind the scenes of her eponymous talk show.

On August 4, Perry tweeted: ‘I know I can’t speak for anyone else’s experience besides my own but I want to acknowledge that I have only ever had positive takeaways from my time with Ellen & on the @theellenshow.’

She added: ‘I think we all have witnessed the light & continual fight for equality that she has brought 2/2 to the world through her platform for decades. Sending you love & a hug, friend @TheEllenShow.’

The Roar hitmaker, who is due to give birth to her first child shortly, has been interviewed by DeGeneres numerous times, and most recently appeared on the show in September 2019.

One current and ten former employees of the daytime chat show have accused its top producers of bullying and sexual harassment.

Late last month, DeGeneres wrote a substantial memo to her employees, saying that she and Warner Bros. are ‘taking steps, together, to correct the issues.’

‘On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness – no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect. Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry,’ she wrote.

‘As we’ve grown exponentially, I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done. Clearly some didn’t,’ she added. ‘That will now change and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again.’

Warner Bros., the studio behind the show, has declined to comment citing an ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, Perry is holed up with her fiance, actor Orlando Bloom, as her due date draws near.

The couple are expecting a baby girl together.

In the LA Times profile, the singer candidly shared that she doesn’t fear the pain of childbirth, declaring: ‘The pain will pass. It’s temporary.’

And she’s applied that same philosophy to life since finding herself in a deep bout of clinical depression after the lackluster release of her album Witness in 2017, something she fought hard to overcome.

‘Five years ago, I would be like, ‘Get this out of me,” she said about her pregnancy. ‘But I traced back the reasons I felt insecure about it from my own upbringing. And then I reprogrammed them. Our brain is really malleable. You can reshape it any time you want.’

Katy said initially she was able to subdue her insecurities through her whirlwind career after having rocketed to stardom in 2008 with the release of her first number one hit, I Kissed A Girl.

It wasn’t until Witness almost 10 years later that she got a wake-up call.

‘The foundation started shaking and a couple of the screws started coming off,’ she said. Then she was forced to confront ‘what kept knocking.’

‘I think the universe was like, ‘OK, all right, let’s have some humble pie here,’ Perry said.

‘My negative thoughts were not great. They didn’t want to plan for a future. I also felt like I could control it by saying, ‘I’ll have the last word if I hurt myself or do something stupid and I’ll show you’ — but really, who was I showing?’

Witness wasn’t the only thing weighing on Katy in 2017. At the time she had split with now-fiance Orlando, explaining she ‘wasn’t ready for the growth’ their relationship needed.

It was around this time she a found fellow singer Sia, who became a close friend and confidant.

The Chandelier singer – who has been open about her mental health struggles – recalled how serious things got after Katy showed up at her house ‘in a bad way.’

‘She had a real breakdown,’ Sia said. ‘She’s on stage with 10 candied lollipops and clowns and dancers, selling the dream, the joy, the happiness — and that’s really hard sometimes when you’re not feeling it yourself.’

‘I knew she was driven and ambitious, that was clear from the beginning. But I didn’t realize that she was so reliant on that validation for her psychological well-being. She did say ‘I feel lost.’

‘I think it was a big kick to her ego, but it was the best thing that could have ever happened to her, really, because now she can make music for the fun of it. Getting number ones does nothing for your inside.’

At the same time Sia said she was reaching out to Orlando to talk about his relationship with Katy.

‘I’d be on the phone with Orlando and have call waiting with Katy trying to call me,’ the Elastic Heart singer admitted.

When they reunited in 2018, Perry was a new woman.

Now the pair are ready to embark on a new journey as parents together.

The expecting star told the Times she was still ‘cooking’ but that she noticed she’s near the finish line. She’s prepared her hospital bag, after realizing she’s been slowing down.

Katy said she’s excited to raise her little girl ‘differently than the way I was raised,’ hoping to foster her little one’s creativity and give her ‘choice and freedom of thought.’

Katy and Orlando are expecting any day now. The star looked just days away from the arrival while spotted out house hunting in Montecito, California on Tuesday.

While this will be Perry’s first child, Bloom is already a father. He shares nine-year-old son Flynn with ex Miranda Kerr.
