Giant rats destroy car and trap mother and her children in their home as they run riot in Yorkshire

  • Giant rats have surrounded mother’s home in Barnsley and destroyed her car
  • She claims Barnsley Council are not taking the rodent threat ‘seriously’
  • 28-year-old who refuses to be named will not let her children play outside

A horrified mother and her children are trapped indoors because giant rats have surrounded their home and destroyed her car.

The 28-year-old, who does not want to be named, said ‘huge’ rodents have swarmed a street in the Darfield area of Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

She claims that Barnsley Council are not taking the threat ‘seriously’ and refuses to let her children play outside in case they’re attacked.

The mother also can’t use her car after a rat chewed through the wires.

She told Yorkshire Live: ‘It’s just not getting any better. It’s horrible I can’t let my children out to play in the garden as it’s just not safe.

‘My son got a new see-saw for his birthday but I’ve had to put it inside as he can’t play on it in the garden in case the rats climb all over it.

‘I also can’t use my car now as one of the rats chewed through the diesel pipe so now I can’t move it.

Mountains of rubbish pile high outside family homes after weeks of lockdown as council and housing association argue over whose job it is to remove the overflowing bin bags

Mountains of rubbish have been piled high outside family homes after weeks of lockdown as a council and housing association argue over who should clean it up.

Parents with young children are furious at the mess, which has blighted the Willenhall area of Coventry, West Midlands.

Bags, overflowing with dirty nappies, old shoes, empty cartons and scraps, are pictured piling up on the road, having not been collected for at least three weeks.

Vermin, including large rats and maggots, have been spotted scurrying in and out the rubbish causing residents to want to leave the area.

‘Nothing is being done to get rid of them, whatever the council is doing it clearly isn’t working.

‘It’s not good enough there are family homes along this street and its just not safe.’

The mother claims that the rats have been an issue ever since she moved into the house almost two years ago.

The rodents can be seen on video climbing up and down walls and bins on the piece of council land opposite the mums home.

Barnsley Council pest control have been out to fill in holes but the rats keep on coming back.

The concerned 28-year-old added: ‘It’s just embarrassing. I feel ashamed of where I live because of it and I can’t have a normal life.

‘The worse thing is it’s now become a sort of attraction with people coming to look at the huge rats.

‘I’m just at my wits end, I’m trying to move but that could take a while.

‘At the moment I don’t dare to go to my bin in case one of them jumps out at me.

‘It’s giving me anxiety, we shouldn’t be living like this.’

Barnsley councillor Chris Lamb said: ‘When we visited Havelock street on 30th April 2020, several issues were found to be the cause of the rats.

‘We have visited the site on many occasions, often on a daily basis, since the complaint was made.

‘In this time we have worked with residents and businesses to try to rectify any problems which could lead to a rat infestation, such as clearing blocked drains, replacing cracked domestic bins and removing any build-up of waste in close proximity to properties on the street.

‘We also requested a drain test from Yorkshire Water, which took place earlier this week.

‘We expect to receive the results of the test within a few days; we continue to address all issues to gain a long term solution to this problem.’
