Woe! Woe! Woe! Retailers battled against weak demand this Christmas

Shop prices continued to fall in December as struggling retailers respond to weak demand and intense competition in run-up to Christmas

Shop prices continued to fall in December as struggling retailers responded to weak demand and intense competition in the crucial run-up to Christmas.

Festive discounting led to a 0.4 per cent drop in prices compared with December last year, and a 0.5 per cent decrease in November.

Non-food retailers bore the brunt of weak sales by desperately pushing discounts to entice shoppers through the doors, sending prices down by 1.5 per cent on 2018.

Woe! Woe! Woe! Santa did not bring Christmas cheer for many retailers this festive season

Helen Dickinson, the British Retail Consortium’s chief executive, said: ‘Shop prices continued to fall as weak demand and intense competition combined to keep price increases at bay.

‘2019 has been a particularly challenging year.’
