John Legend says he helps wife Chrissy Teigen in the kitchen

‘Sometimes I take over the whole meal!’ John Legend says he helps wife Chrissy Teigen prepare family meals because she stops feeling ‘creative’ after working on her recipe books

He’s currently adjusting to another week of enforced lockdown in the fight against coronavirus COVID-19.

But John Legend admits he’s spending much of his time cooking for wife Chrissy Teigen, 34, and their two children, Luna, four, and Miles, 23-months, during their extended time behind closed doors.

Speaking to Jessie and Lennie Ware’s Table Manners podcast from the family home in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Legend, 41, gave fans an insight into his daily routine – and admitted it usually began in the kitchen.

He said: ‘I’m most responsible for cooking breakfast in my house, so I cook pancakes for my kids, I cook omelettes for me and Chrissy, waffles, french toast.

‘Pretty much any kind of breakfast you can imagine, bacon sausage, all that stuff I’m responsible for and I like to play music as I’m cooking.’

The award winning musician admitted he is happy to roll up his sleeves and help prepare dishes for his loved ones because Chrissy is often reluctant to cook after working on her Cravings recipe book series.

The TV personality has enjoyed enormous success as an author, with first book Cravings: Recipes for All of the Food You Want to Eat quickly becoming a New York Times bestseller.

‘She gets tired of cooking especially when she’s finished with her book,’ he said. ‘It’s almost like when I finish touring I don’t want to sing for a little while.

‘I think she feels the same way when she’s just finished a book – she’s over it for a while and she’s just not feeling creative in that moment.

‘So she’s happy to have me help and sometimes I’ll take over the whole meal. Sometimes I’ll be her sous chef and will do it together, sometimes I’ll do breakfast or lunch for the kids but she’ll make dinner for me and her.

‘So sometimes it’s all over the place and sometimes we order in.’

Reflecting on his relationship with Chrissy, who he married in 2013, John recalled their first meeting came through photographer Nabil Elderkin after she was cast to appear in a music video for 2007 track Stereo.

‘We were living on separate coasts at the time, she was living in Los Angeles and I was in New York and eventually we started living together on both coasts and fell in love and you know the rest is history,’ he explained.

‘The cool part about that is that Nabil is still both of our friends and he shot the video for All Of Me seven years after we met and we got married seven years after we met at Lake Como and he shot the video there. It’s a full circle moment.’
