Outlander season 5: Stephen Bonnet star explains Brianna Fraser’s betrayal | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Outlander characters Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan), Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe), Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton), and Roger Mackenzie (Richard Rankin) have been living in fear of Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers) since season four. The Starz villain has tormented the family for years with Brianna traumatised when he raped her in one of the most horrifying scenes in the Starz series.

Last night, however, fans saw the end of his journey, as Stephen was captured and killed for his crimes.

Jamie and Roger tried and failed to capture the Irishman as he slipped from their grasp and held Brianna hostage, trying to persuade her to be a family at River Run with Jemmy.

But Brianna refused and Stephen tried to sell her as a slave.

Fortunately, Stephen’s plan fell through and he was captured and put into chains. He was set to be drowned but as he went into the waves, Brianna took mercy on her rapist.

In a last-minute turn of events, however, Brianna shot him in the head just before he drowned as he was petrified of the sea and believed it had been trying to claim his soul for years.

On this death, Stephen star Ed spoke out about what this meant for Brianna, and indeed her story going forward.

Speaking to Town and Country Mag Ed first spoke out about learning of his character’s death.

He joked: “My beer dropped to the sand, when I realised I was now going to be unemployed.”

“Brianna is putting him out of his misery – I don’t think it’s purely just a murder, but she’s decided to do it.”

Ed added: “I think it’s a case of saying: ‘Well I can see you’re suffering, I’m going to take control of the situation.

“‘I’m going to end it for you, not because I like you, not because I’ve resolved the situation I’m in, but because I’m taking control.’”

Fans will no doubt be eager to see the end of Stephen’s story, but they will surely not refute that it was a dramatic turn of events.
