AMERICAN Idol fans were furious after eliminated contestant Margie Mays was on camera front-and-center ahead of boyfriend Jonny West’s top 20 performance.
Judge Katy Perry, 35, previously criticized the couple when they performed a duet together on the ABC competition for lacking “boundaries” between one another.
The 26-year-old was eliminated during Hollywood week on the singing show last month – marking her second failed attempt at becoming an Idol hopeful.
During Sunday’s first episode filming remotely, the top 20 performed from their homes across the country.
Jonny sang the Louis Armstrong classic What A Wonderful World from his apartment in Studio City, California.
Just before his performance, his girlfriend covered up the camera in an extreme close-up to the camera.
Margie took up nearly the entire lens before she went over to kiss her boyfriend on the cheek as he prepped on the keyboard.
She made eye-contact with the camera several times during her brief reappearance on Idol.
Fans slammed the former contestant after seeing her pop up on their TV’s, with one critic saying: “Margie makes me want to throw up! This is Jonny’s time!”
Another wrote: “I don’t think Margie is ready to accept the fact that she’s not a contestant on Idol anymore. Get out of the camera frame and let Jonny do his thing.”
“Why does margie act like Jonnys manager rather than his girlfriend,” another blasted.
One Twitter user fired off: “Johnny’s girlfriend is holding him back and she seems like a ‘psycho girlfriend.’”
“I already got annoyed seeing Margie on the TV,” another said of her quick cameo.
Katy – who was dragged by fans for dressing up as a bottle of hand sanitizer – praised Jonny’s rendition of the song and repeatedly said “we’re not worthy” as she bowed down.
“You can take your career wherever you want to take it. Don’t stop your music journey no matter what happens,” Luke Bryan, 43, enthusiastically said.
Lionel Richie, 70, sang his praises: “You have a vocal arsenal. A musical chops arsenal. A writer arsenal… you have it all. Enjoy this ride.”
During what would be Jonny’s girlfriends last performance – Margie sang Lost Without You but appeared to struggle with her vocals throughout the song.
When she finished, she was met with blank stares by the three judges and looked frustrated as she exited the stage.
“I don’t know if I was in love with that performance. I just feel like there wasn’t much of a reaction. I don’t know what to feel. It scares me. I don’t know if that was what it takes to… I don’t know.
“I feel like I left them hanging. She laughed when I said “thank you” because I had to signify it was over,” Margie admitted about Katy’s reaction to her vocals.
She was sent home later that night after Jonny received the good news he made it through to Hawaii for the top 40 round.
