Finally, Aoife Hinds plays Connell’s university girlfriend Helen, who has also appeared in Derry Girls.

The mainly Irish cast filmed at a string of locations, including the capital of Dublin, and the west coast town of Tubbercurry in County Sligo.

What is Normal People about?

The BBC and Hulu have joined forces to bring to life the coming-of-age novel by Irish author Sally Rooney, who has also penned Conversations With Friends.

It begins in a small Irish town where two teenagers and classmates – from differing social backgrounds – start to fall in love.

Marianne, a loner at school, and the son of her family’s cleaner Connell, who is very popular, begin a secret sexual relationship which is broken off by the end of term.

They next meet at university at the prestigious Trinity College Dublin where Marianne has flourished and Connell is struggling to fit in.

The story continues to follow the couple over the next few years as they mature and try to navigate their feelings for one another.

How can I watch Normal People?

The first instalment of the series will air on Monday, April 27, 2020 at 9pm on BBC One.

There will be 12 episodes in total, and all will become available on BBC iPlayer.
