The Statler Brothers star Harold Reid dies aged 80

The Statler Brothers star Harold Reid has sadly died at age 80, with his fellow band members announcing the news.

Harold was a founding member and bass singer for the country band, with the musician passing away in his hometown, Staunton, Virginia, on Friday.

The band announced the sad news on their website, writing in a statement: ‘HAROLD REID of The Statler Brothers passed away April 24, 2020.’

They added: ‘He had bravely endured a long battle with kidney failure. He is and will always be loved by his family, friends and millions of fans.

‘His singing, his songwriting and his comedy made generations happy. He has taken a piece of our hearts with him.’

The Statler brothers was made up of Harold, his brother Don Reid, Lew DeWitt, and Phil Basley, and they first rose to fame when they joined Johnny Cash on his roadshow.

They went on to win three Grammy Awards, being best known for their hits including Flowers On The Wall, Do You Remember These, and Class of ’57.

Aside from their successful music career, the band members also had their own cable TV show, The Statler Brothers Show, which aired for seven seasons in the 1990s.

The band was formed back in 1955, with the four of them first performing gospel music at local churches.

Although they later delved into the country music scene, they never strayed away from their gospel roots, with Harold once saying: ‘We took gospel harmonies and put them over in country music.’

Fans have been taking to social media to pay tribute to the late musician, with one writing: ‘A lot of folks are going to be digging out there Statler Brothers albums today. RIP Harold Reid.’

‘Tonight I’m am saddened,’ another added. ‘I am at a loss for words. My heart is just broken. Country music’s friend #HaroldReid of the #StatlerBrothers has passed. Please be in prayer for his family and brothers. Blessings.’

One more added: ‘RIP Harold Reid of the Statler Brothers! He was always my favorite of the group!’
