‘Your heart skips a beat’: Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald reveals he was worried about giving his family COVID-19 after he interviewed Richard Wilkins

Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald immediately got tested for COVID-19 last month after news broke that Richard Wilkins had contracted the virus.

And on Tuesday, the Nova FM radio host, 43, revealed that his first thought was not about his own health but that he could have passed the virus on to his family.

‘Your heart skips a beat. You just instantly think of your family first and if there’s going to be an impact on them,’ he told 10 Daily.

Fitzy and his wife, Belinda Irons, share two sons, 10 -year-old Hewie and six-year-old Lenny.

Fitzy, his co-host Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli and their entire team were forced to self-isolate following their interview with Richard last month.

‘You’ve never lived like that [self-isolation] before. Then you’ve got to adjust and work out how you’re going to live like that, but then by the end of isolation, after the 14 days… we still live the isolated life,’ Fitzy said.

The Fitzy and Wippa team have since tested negative for coronavirus.

After 18 days in self-isolation, Richard finally tested negative for COVID-19 last week, after testing positive four times, and returned to hosting Weekend Today.

On Tuesday, Fitzy hosted the one-hour documentary Coronavirus Australia: Our Story, which aired on Channel 10.

While promoting the documentary on The Project, Fitzy and host Peter Helliar made a joke about Richard in which they alluded to him ‘getting tested’ for an STI.

‘Fitzy, did you ever think you would have to say, “I got tested after Richard Wilkins”? Did you ever think you would have to say that?’ Peter asked.

Fitzy replied with a wry smile: ‘You know what? That’s what I want to have on my tombstone when I go, Peter!’
