Locked-down Britons are set to bask in a mini-heatwave this weekend as the sun breaks through on Sunday, bringing an end to the recent cold snap.

Weather experts say temperatures could rocket to 68F but the nation will have to endure more overcast weather first, with a cold and windy end to the week.

According to Met Office, today will be mostly dry but ‘windy and wintry’ for northern Scotland, with conditions becoming colder for most tomorrow.

But the mercury will begin to rise on Saturday, remaining ‘mostly dry’ with ‘sunny spells’.

In its five-day weather forecast, Met Office said: ‘Mostly dry through the weekend with sunny spells.

‘Becoming warm, but also windy. Outbreaks of rain moving east later Sunday and into Monday with sunshine and showers following.’

For tomorrow, the weather service forecast: ‘Wintry showers in the far north.

‘These gradually easing during the day, lasting longest for Shetland where still windy.

‘Otherwise fairly cloudy but mostly dry. Colder than Thursday for most.’

Meteorologist Matt Taylor forecast the UK to see 'both sides of spring' in the next few days, but urged Britons to stay at home despite the sunny conditions, as the nation self-isolates amid the coronavirus crisis

Meteorologist Matt Taylor forecast the UK to see ‘both sides of spring’ in the next few days, but urged Britons to stay at home despite the sunny conditions, as the nation self-isolates amid the coronavirus crisis

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: ‘On Saturday it looks like it will be dry with sunny spells, although there will be some showers across the north and the west of the UK.

‘Temperatures will start to rise to about 15C or 16C. And on Sundays we could see highs of 19C, possibly even 20C. This is well above average for April.’

But Britons will be encouraged to catch the rays from their back garden, as the nation remains in lockdown during the coronavirus crisis.

BC meteorologist Tomasz Schafernaker said: ‘Friday night into Saturday, that’s when we start to see some changes, now see these isobars pointing from south due north. That’s where the wind is coming from.

‘That’s a warmer source, so that means temperatures will start to pick up already on Saturday, there’ll be some sunshine around too. 14C expected in London but come Sunday that’s when that really warm air will start to arrive, a plume of warm air from the southern climbs and some sunshine around too.

‘Obviously we live in times where we can’t really make the most of the weather, but at least knowing that the weather’s fine out there is quite a cheerful thing to talk about.’
