Brigadier Parker Bowles, 80, was seen in close contact with members of the Royal Family including Princess Anne and her daughter Zara.

But the retired Army officer said he was told he would not have been contagious until the Monday after he attended, March 16.

He told the Daily Telegraph: ‘I’ve felt awful. I’ve had a bad cough and been very lethargic. I’m sleeping twice as long as normal.’

He said ‘you can’t blame Cheltenham’ for going ahead ‘but I do know quite a few people who picked it up there’.

More than 250,000 people attended the event over its four days.
