Insurance group Phoenix has hired former Aviva high-flyer Andy Briggs as its chief executive

Insurance group Phoenix has hired former Aviva high-flyer Andy Briggs as its chief executive.

Briggs, 53, will join the FTSE 100 firm in January and take over as chief executive in March when Clive Bannister, who has held the job since 2011, stands down.

Briggs has spent more than 30 years in insurance and was chief executive of Aviva’s UK division until recently, when he missed out on replacing Mark Wilson. 

The job went to Maurice Tulloch, who ran the international division.
