A bridal gown designer has been crowned the first ever Ms Great Britain, after the contest introduced a new category for women over 28.

April Banbury, 30, from Hemel Hempsted, Hertfordshire, was declared the winner of the new beauty contest,  beating hundreds of other contestants to take home the crown in a glittering ceremony in Leicester.

The beauty queen is the daughter of Ian Banbury, who represented Great Britain in the 1976 Olympic Games, and became the youngest athlete in the world to win a bronze medal for cycling.

And she told Femail she’s delighted she never gave up on her dream after being a runner up in Miss Great Britain twice.

She creates sumptuous bespoke garments by hand and she even wore her own design in the competition.

‘I was a finalist in Britain’s Top Designer and although I didn’t win, my hard work took me to London Fashion Week’ she said.

‘It was a dream come true. I’ve always had a little insecure fairy on the inside saying I might not be good enough.

‘When I showed my first couture collection which I handmade here in England by myself – I spent so many hours hidden away creating these handmade garments – and so when I got the positive feedback that I did, I was truly humbled. I cried – a lot.

‘I was the first designer to use models of diversity at London Fashion Week. My main model had Down’s syndrome’ she added.

‘I remember her and her mother thanking me for such a rare opportunity, and I thought to myself that they shouldn’t have to be overwhelmed with gratitude, because it should be something we consider as normal.’

Ms Great Britain was set up to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Miss Great Britain pageant, the country’s longest-running beauty contest which has a stringent set of rules, including that all contestants must be ages between 18 and 27.

Hundreds of people applied for the title and 30 were parachuted straight to the final.

‘The process starts with an application, if you are successful you qualify as a Ms Great Britain finalist, which puts you through to the live finals,’ April explained.

‘I entered more than six months ago and worked extremely hard in the lead up to the live finals.

‘I supported Cancer Research UK and Alex’s by taking to the skies and flying a plane upside down, even though I’m petrified of heights’ April explained.

‘The competition starts from the moment you’re accepted. From various fundraising events I put myself forward for and events I spoke at about my passions to make a more positive impact in the world.

‘Every girl is unique and different and that’s what I love,’ she said.

‘I remember when I was young watching a pageant on the TV with my nan who raised me, thinking I would never get an opportunity like that.

‘My nan was the one who said I could achieve anything if I wanted to and just believed in myself.

‘And this is why I’ve returned to Miss Great Britain for the third time but this time as a Ms.

‘I have a dream and never gave up and that’s why I want to become the first Ms Great Britain because it will enable my voice to be heard to make this change in the fashion industry once and for all.

‘I wan to show that no matter your background, culture or how difficult someone’s life may have been, if you have a dream and you believe in yourself, you can achieve it.’

How did April become the first Ms Great Britain?

After an initial application, where hundreds applied,  April placed in the final 30, before taking home the crown.

Here, she explained the process to Femail.

INTERVIEW ROUND

‘It’s a one-to-one with the judges to tell them about yourself, what you can bring to the table and why you should be Ms Great Britain.

‘I won best in interview. Because of pageants I have landed every job I’ve ever applied for because of the interview skills I’ve learnt.

FASHION WEAR ROUND

‘A fashion show were you chose a garment that best reflects your personality and you can show confidence in.

BIKINI ROUND

‘I must express this isn’t about who’s in the best shape it’s about how comfortable you are in your own skin.

‘It’s about owning your body. I have the most horrendous stretch marks I used to cry one now I’ve learnt to love them and my body just the way it is.

EVENING GOWN ROUND

‘An evening gown you chose which makes you feel like the best version of yourself, elegance, confidence and poise.

‘I made my own evening gown. I know exactly what suits my body and my dress made me feel so confident even though I have insecure moments in real life.

‘For that moment on stage I felt on top of the world, showing everyone “this is me”.

INTERVIEW ON STAGE

‘The top 8 are interviewed live onstage, this is judges on how well you can public speak and how well you can deliver your message.

‘I always crumble inside at this. But I was just 100% myself, I’m bubbly and giggly but so very passionate and that’s what I wanted everyone to see. I was being true to myself.
