Jack Whitehall reveals he once insulted Lady Gaga at the British Fashion Awards

Jack Whitehall has revealed the ‘hardest gig’ he ever did was the British Fashion Awards where he unintentionally insulted Lady Gaga.

The comedian, 32, told the cringe-worthy story on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X when he made a guest appearance on Monday.

He recalled that the gig ended with a furious Lady Gaga calling him an ‘obscene word’ after he let slip to the crowd that she was having a ‘wardrobe malfunction’.

Jack said that he still suffers flashbacks from the tough gig, saying: ‘I have PTSD about it. It was the hardest gig you have ever seen.’

He explained that, before Covid, he hosted the British Fashion Awards for five years in a row but it was always incredibly tough crowd to amuse with guests such as Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld in the front row.

‘I reckon I got one or two laughs in the entire five year period,’ he joked.

However, the worst moment out of the five years of hosting the fashion award ceremonies was his run-in with Lady Gaga.

Recalling the night he said: ‘There was one time where I was on stage and I just tanked all night. I got no laughs from the audience.

‘I’d obviously completely run out of material and they were in my ear saying that there was a delay and that the next presenter wasn’t ready to come on.’

The presenter waiting to come on was pop sensation, Lady Gaga, who is known for her outrageous fashion choices, and was delayed due to a ‘wardrobe malfunction’.

Jack thought he would crack a joke about Lady Gaga’s infamous ‘meat dress’ to break the tension – but the punch line was awkwardly cut short.

‘I was putting together the mechanics of what the joke might be so I was like: “Our next guest presenter is Lady Gaga, she’s had a wardrobe malfunction”, he said.

‘I was thinking I was going to make a joke about a meat dress. And then they went: “She’s ready, bring her on,” and I went: “It’s Lady Gaga!”

‘And I panicked so my introduction was just me telling everyone that her dress had broken.

‘She walked past, she wouldn’t even look at me and I heard her calling me a very obscene word to the stage manager, and I left in shame.’

The interaction between the pair is though to have taken place in 2015, although it is unclear as Lady Gaga also attended the British Fashion Awards in 2016, while Jack was hosting both years.

The Bad Education actor has since moved on from the awkward hiccup with the American singer and is currently loved up with model girlfriend Roxy Horner, 29.

The couple met during a trip to Australia, and after just two weeks of dating, they decided to spend the coronavirus lockdown together with the romance progressing from there.

Jack admitted although the decision ‘accelerated’ their relationship, they did miss out on doing ordinary things like restaurant and cinema dates.

Speaking on the Couples Quarantine podcast, he explained: ‘Weirdly that was quite nice because we spent a lot of time together and it accelerates the relationship in a way.

‘Then when lockdown ended, there’s a lot of things we realised. We’d never gone to see a film together. We’d never been to a restaurant in England because we met in Australia.’
