Meghan Markle’s pal Misha Nonoo says a capsule wardrobe of just 10 pieces is the future of fashion

Meghan Markle’s BFF Misha Nonoo has unveiled a new 10-piece collection aimed at encouraging people to stop buying clothes in bulk and adopt a simplified capsule wardrobe.

The British-Bahraini designer, who lives in the US with her billionaire oil heir husband Mikey Hess and is known for her eponymous clothing line, claims the idea of overhauling your closet every season is ‘outdated’.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, she added there’s a ‘cleverness to not being frivolous’ and insisted she’s only ever travelled with hand luggage because she relies on just a couple of different pieces wherever she goes.

‘The idea that we need a wardrobe overhaul for every new season, or that we wear entirely different clothes in the day as we do in the evening is dated and not representative of how women actually dress,’ Misha told the publication.

‘You really can imbue just as much of your own personality into a capsule wardrobe. It’s just that previously it felt aspirational to have lots of things… But what feels aspirational now is how you can be as thrifty as possible with the pieces you buy – there is a cleverness to not being frivolous.’

She added: ‘I think that producing in bulk is the crux of so many problems in fashion.’

Following a year where most people rethought the role of their wardrobes, Misha’s new Perfect Ten collection, released today, comprises of 10 pieces which includes her popular Husband Shirt, worn by Meghan to the Invictus Games in 2017.

Misha told how the Duchess of Sussex, with whom she created a collection for the UK charity Smart Works, is ‘a huge advocate’ for a capsule wardrobe.

The new collection also features her Everyday Turtleneck, the Ivy Pant and new matching loungewear – versatile pieces to be mixed, matched, and layered, which she says form the basis of a ‘seasonless, streamlined, and sustainable wardrobe’.

Misha is famed for her timeless, modular wardrobe in a mostly monochrome palette and is a staunch believer in the ‘buy better, wear longer’ movement.

She claims she could easily limit herself to just a handful of items in dark colours, and admitted the only colourful piece in her wardrobe is a pink bikini which she’s worn just once or twice.

When it came to photographing her new capsule collection, Misha selected 10 London-based professional women, giving each the chance to fashion the ‘Perfect 10’ to reflect their own personal style.

The group consisted of Charlotte Rey, founder of Campbell Rey; Jules Miller, founder of The Nue Co.; Lucy Yeomans, creator and founder of DREST; Marine Edith-Crosta, painter and co-founder of Crosta Smith Gallery; photographer Morgane Lay; Nikki Tibbles, founder of Wild at Heart florist; Ruth Rogers, chef and owner of The River Café; Serena Hood, co-founder and CEO of Collagerie.com; commercial lawyer Thandi Maqubela and Venetia Archer, founder and CEO of RUUBY.

She told how the inspiration behind her simple yet chic style is the years she spent in France while studying in Paris.

‘[These women] would walk past me and I would think how great they looked but I could never pick out one particular item of clothing – there were no seasonal trends, no bright colours,’ she told the Telegraph.

She claims dressing in that manner meant it was the wearers who did the talking, not the clothes. In addition, her limited personal wardrobe means she doesn’t ‘waste time or energy’ deciding what to wear.

Misha married her husband Mikey in a ceremony in Rome in September 2019 that was attended by Prince Harry, Meghan, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice before announcing her pregnancy at the end of the year.

The couple announced the birth of their first child Leo in March last year.

The first time mother has since been making an effort to connect with friends virtually, previously admitting: ‘It’s very stressful not having your normal life to return to — I knew having a baby would change my life, but I never expected this.

Reflecting on the experience of working together on the Smart Works collection, Misha described Meghan as 'the ultimate professional' and very 'considerate' of the women the collection was helping

During her pregnancy, Misha told People, that the Duchess of Sussex had been sharing her advice about becoming a first-time mother.

The designer revealed: ‘As with all friendships, you share lots of tips and everything.’

Her baby announcement came less than a year after close friend Meghan gave birth to baby Archie in May 2019.

The Duchess has continued to support her friend by wearing Misha Nonoo styles over the years, wearing another of Misha’s designs for her final day of meetings in the UK before stepping back from royal duties.

Reflecting on the experience of working together on the Smart Works collection, Misha described Meghan as ‘the ultimate professional’ and very ‘considerate’ of the women the collection was helping.

‘It was such an ideal, incredibly easy collaboration,’ she said. ‘It was, from start to finish, wonderful, thoughtful, considerate, as is she.’
