Sir Keir Starmer is slammed for bagging two free tickets to Sunday’s Euros final even though Labour fears the packed stadium won’t be safe for fans

  • Labour leader accused by Tories of ‘double standards’ for attending Wembley
  • He was given two free tickets to tonight’s Euros final against Italy in London
  • Alison McGovern earlier voiced concerns about fans packing into the stadium

Sir Keir Starmer was under fire last night for bagging two free tickets to tonight’s Euros final even though Labour has raised concerns about whether it was safe for fans.

The Labour leader was accused by the Tories of ‘double standards’ for agreeing to be a guest of the Premier League at Wembley tonight – alongside an expected crowd of 60,000.

But only last week, Shadow Sports Minister Alison McGovern voiced concerns about that many fans packing into stadiums and called on Ministers to publish data to show it was safe.

Last night, Tory MP Richard Holden said Sir Keir should return the tickets if that was really Labour’s view.

He said: ‘It really is double-standards for Sir Keir to bag two free tickets for Wembley just as the Labour Party is questioning whether fans should go to the match due to ‘safety concerns’.’

Mr Holden added that he was ‘sure the Government wouldn’t allow 60,000 fans to enjoy this great occasion if it wasn’t safe for them to do so’.

Labour sources said it was ‘complete nonsense’ to suggest that they did not want fans in the ground tonight.

They claimed the Tories had ‘never been fully and immediately transparent’ on what was learnt from attendance at earlier Euros matches.

A spokesman for Sir Keir said: ‘Keir is delighted to attend Wembley for this historic occasion.’

In light of England’s historic final, Boris Johnson has been challenged to put fans first in the bid to host the 2030 World Cup – by capping ticket prices.

Labour Shadow Sports Secretary Jo Stevens said: ‘We must make it affordable to watch the World Cup on home soil for the first time since 1966.’
