Man allegedly steals luxury car with two young children stuck INSIDE – as one tries to fight him off before he flees on foot

  • A 44-year-old man has been charged after allegedly stealing a luxury SUV 
  • A woman, 43, parked the car in Newstead in Brisbane about 9am Saturday 
  • The man allegedly tried to drive off with two children still inside the car 
  • After hitting a pole he allegedly fled, with police finding him in a nearby street  

An alleged car thief has been charged after police say he stole a luxury Range Rover Sport with two children still sitting inside. 

A woman, 43, had parked her car in the trendy Brisbane suburb of Newstead about 9am on Saturday when the man allegedly jumped behind the wheel of the black SUV. 

The 44-year-old man accelerated forward hitting the gutter and a pole as one of the children attempted to stop him by shouting and distracting him, police allege.

He allegedly reversed and tried to back out of the car space at which point the began began yelling for him to stop – attracting the attention of bystanders. 

The man then allegedly fled the car and ran down a major road with officers later spotting him nearby and arresting him. 

He has been charged with unlawful entry of vehicle for committing indictable offence, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle and adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, assault police, obstruct police, driving without a driver licence and drink driving offences. 

The man is being held in custody to appear in Brisbane Magistrate’s Court on Monday. 

The woman and two children were not injured in the incident. 

Police are asking anyone who might have witnessed the alleged car theft to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
