Magnitude 4.8 earthquake hits New Zealand with hundreds feeling a shake

  • A 4.8 earthquake struck near Tūrangi, North Island, about 12.23pm on Thursday
  • More than 1600 New Zealanders have reported feeling the impact of the tremors
  • A second 3.8 magnitude quake hit almost an hour later about 5km away 

New Zealand has been rocked by a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as hundreds of Kiwis report feeling a shake. 

The quake struck about 15km north-east of Tūrangi, on southern end of Lake Taupo on the North Island, at 12.23pm local time on Thursday, at a depth of 5km.

More than 1600 people have reported feeling the earthquake on the GeoNet website, with 37 nearby residents saying the shakes were ‘strong’.

The majority reported weak to moderate shaking, while 38 felt ‘strong’ tremors, two people ‘severe’, and another four ‘extreme’ trembling.

A second 3.8 magnitude quake struck nearby almost an hour later, 20k north-east of Tūrangi, at the same depth. 

New Zealanders have flocked to social media to describe the tremors they experienced. 

‘Woah, that was another decent shake!’ One woman wrote.

‘Wobble, wobble, wobble,’ another added.
