It’s the news at (legs) 11! BBC man is caught wearing shorts and deck shoes under the desk to read bulletin on the hottest day of the year

  • BBC anchorman wore shorts and deck shoes under desk while reading news
  • Twitter users spotted Shaun Ley, 51, dressing informally from waist down
  • On Wednesday, temperatures peaked at 82.9F (28.3C) in Northolt, London

A BBC anchorman wore shorts and deck shoes under the desk while reading a serious news bulletin on Wednesday, the hottest day of the year.

Though broadcaster Shaun Ley, 51, was dressed in a jacket and tie from the waist up, eagle-eyed viewers spotted his legs in a split-second side view.

He appeared grim-faced and serious from the front while explaining coronavirus travel rules and the political turmoil engulfing Israel.

But one Twitter user jibed: ‘Is BBC news reader Shaun Ley keeping his cool by wearing shorts? And if so, were viewers meant to find out?’

Another explained: ‘It’s hot today in London (where Broadcasting House, which is where their newsroom, is located), that’s why he’s wearing shorts.’

On Wednesday, temperatures peaked at 82.9F (28.3C) in Northolt, west London after hitting previous 2021 highs on Tuesday with 79F (26.1C) in Cardiff and 77.2F (25.1C) at Kinlochewe in the Highlands on bank holiday Monday.

Guests reviewing the newspapers appeared to be stifling laughter when they turned to him to discuss the serious issues of the day.

Mr Ley was still in casual attire as midnight approached, but was wearing glasses.

He was also spotted wearing shorts while reading the news in late April.

Another Twitter user explained: 'It's hot today in London (where Broadcasting House, which is where their newsroom, is located), that's why he's wearing shorts'

At the time, one Twitter user posted: ‘Must be warm in the @BBCNews studio, Shaun Ley wearing shorts – Behind a desk maybe but come on’.

The Devon-born presenter lives in west London, where he has been spotted strolling in shorts to get a tan, according to the Sun.

He joined the BBC from university in 1990 and has worked on Radio 4’s World at One, and hosted shows about his beloved Doctor Who.

Watching the headlines, Justyna Tosun, 34, told the Sun: ‘I roared with laughter! He’d been reading all this gloomy news when I realised he had no trousers on.

‘It was hilarious because he looked like a bank manager from the waist up – and a holidaymaker from the waist down.’

She added: ‘It was like something out of a comedy show.’

The BBC has been contacted for comment.
