‘She just cries!’ Ed Sheeran jokes that his daughter doesn’t enjoy his music when he plays for her

He is one of the most in-demand musicians anywhere in the world right now having just teased potential new music.

But Ed Sheeran has revealed that not everyone is such a big fan of his music – joking that his own daughter turns her nose up at his songs.

Ed was speaking to BBC Radio 1 ahead of his performance at the Big Weekend of Live Music 2021.

During one segment, he was responding to some of his younger fans, with children having sent in questions.

The musician said: ‘I definitely spent hour and hours in front of the mirror pretending to be essentially what I am now. Practice makes perfect innit.

‘Now I’ll sing [my new songs] to my daughter who’s not my biggest fan. She just cries.

‘No, I’ve got some she likes. She really likes Shape Of You, the marimba sound is good but she doesn’t like anything loud or anything belty.’

Recently, Elton John revealed he would be stopping singing Crocodile Rock after one last farewell tour, and Ed said he like the idea of laying certain songs to rest.

He said: ‘Obviously I am a professional performer, obviously I enjoy my job but there are some songs that… well, I just think all of my songs are owned by the public aren’t they? Like Thinking Out Loud is someone’s first dance song, or The A Team is someone’s uni song.

‘They’re kind of owned by people so I don’t feel like I have the right to charge people to come to a concert and then be like, “Well, I’m not gunna play this song that you like.” They pay to come and see the songs, they should see the songs that they like.

‘I quite liked Elton John’s thing where he’s doing his big Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour and then he’s never playing Crocodile Rock again and if you wanna go and see him he’s gunna do like small theatres or whatever and just play the songs he likes.’

Ed also commented on his involvement in the 2019 film Yesterday and laughed at the irony of not being initially selected given the premise of the film.

He said: ‘If you look at that movie, the premise is a bloke who gets really, really, really famous round the world, and it’s a bit unbelievable that he got really, really famous round the world… comes from Suffolk… so there are all these factors in it where I was like, has he sort of written this about me?

‘And I didn’t wanna ask, I didn’t wanna even think that. And then I got invited round Richard’s house with my wife. […] And so Richard’s talking to me about the film and he’s like, “We’re thinking of getting Chris Martin as the musical guy in the film,” and I’m like, “Okay but… Suffolk, music…”.’

Ed added that he never turns down an offer of appearing in a film, despite becoming more selective in the work he does do.

Reflecting on how his career has changed his life, Ed said: ‘I don’t know whether my ten-year-ago self would recognise the guy now. I mean I never ever thought I would play anything bigger than a theatre ten years ago.

‘I was just like, I’ll play Shepherd’s Bush Empire and that will be my peak. So I feel like with the way my career has progressed my perception of what I should be doing has changed, if that makes sense.’

He also said that he used some of his new-found wealth to establish a foundation helping pay for instruments and music lessons for children.

It comes after he gave a rare glimpse inside his £3.7m East Suffolk estate, dubbed the ‘Sheeranville, on Thursday.

The singer, who is also said to own 27 properties in London as part of his impressive £57million portfolio, took to Instagram to share a fun picture of himself posing with a giant Pokémon Snorlax teddy.

In the background, a £350 statement map artwork by Dave Buonaguidi could be seen which says ‘Suffolk is always a good idea’.

The room inside his home was decorated with white walls, a wood skirting board, beige fluffy carpet and a white bookcase which appeared to be from IKEA.

Despite owning an impressive property portfolio, Ed spends the majority of his time at his East Suffolk estate with wife Cherry Seaborn and their daughter Lyra, nine months.

The star’s five property estate also includes a pub, recording studio, tree house, swimming pool, underground music room and a cinema with a 35ft by 20ft screen.

Over the years, Ed has offered his 32million fans tiny glimpses into his home life with rare updates from his various properties and from his two cats – Calippo and Dorito.

In 2019, the singer shared a look at his £19.8m Holland Park mansion in his music video for Put It All On Me, featuring Ella Mai.

Ed sweetly danced with his wife Cherry in the video, which offered a glimpse at their stunning state-of-the-art marble kitchen.

Other details included stylish brick walls, black crittall doors, house plants and plush vibrant furnishings.

The kitchen is the same place that was used as the backdrop for Ed’s announcement that he was engaged to Cherry in January 2018.
