Kate Middleton and Prince William royally charm Emma Stone and Emma Thompson

Kate Middleton and Prince William joined Emma Thompson and Emma Stone, the stars of Disney’s new film Cruella, for a laughter-filled video call on Monday.

The Duke, 38, and Duchess of Cambridge, 39, who are enjoying a tour of Scotland this week, chatted with the leading actors ahead of a drive-in screening of the film for NHS staff on Wednesday.

‘Nice to see you, darling,’ Thompson, 62, told Prince William as they started the call, with the actress having known the royal since he was young, thanks to her friendship with his father Prince Charles.

The call saw Stone, 32, mention shooting a scene outside Buckingham Palace, recalling: ‘I was riding a motorcycle around The Mall.’

‘We should have had you stopped, Emma, it’s very dangerous,’ replied Prince William, jokingly.

The royal couple thanked the celebrities for letting them share Cruella with NHS workers at the Palace of Holyrood two days before the film’s premiere date.

Kate also asked the stars about their experience on set, and Thompson discussed the costumes designed for the film.

She joked that she often thought the 1970s outfits had once belonged to her as they were that familiar.

‘I kept looking at all the frocks and thinking, “I think that’s mine. I’m sure I’ve worn that,”‘ she said, adding: ‘You won’t remember because you’re all too young.’

In another section, Prince William spoke about being ‘propositioned’ by nursing home resident Betty McGee, 96, during an engagement earlier in the week.

‘I got propositioned by a 96-year-old lady called Betty yesterday who wanted to kiss me,’ he said.

‘She’s in a care home with her daughter and I said, “Betty, if I do that, I’m going to get slapped on the back of the head for being inappropriate, social distancing”.

‘She said, “I’ll have you afterwards then!” She was a right character.’

Laughing, Kate added: ‘This is what happens when I’m not around.’

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hosted NHS Charities Together and NHS staff for a unique drive-in cinema to watch a special screening of Disney’s Cruella at the Palace – where they are staying – on the penultimate day of their week-long visit to Scotland.

Before the screening, Kate delivered a short speech in which she paid tribute to NHS staff across Scotland and thanked them for their dedication, commitment and personal sacrifice.

We wanted to thank you for the extraordinary dedication, commitment and personal sacrifice you have shown in supporting our communities through this pandemic.

‘It is a real privilege to work with NHS Charities Together. For the last 13 years it has worked tirelessly to improve services for patients and support NHS staff and volunteers, both practically and emotionally. Today, this work has never been more important.

‘So, with an enormous thank you to Her Majesty The Queen for allowing us to host the first-ever drive-in film night here at Holyrood. And with a huge thank you to Disney and BAFTA, for putting on this evening, and to the fabulous actress Tipper for joining us here tonight, William and I invite you to grab your popcorn, cuddle up under your blankets and be transported to 1970s Britain for an evening of much-deserved fun, drama, glamour and escapism!’
