Jessica Alba says going from acting to entrepreneurship was ‘pretty easy’ after becoming a mother… as she talks The Honest Company on Nasdaq’s Mission Driven

Jessica Alba says pivoting from entertainment to entrepreneurship was ‘pretty easy’ after becoming a mother.

The Honest Company founder, 40, explained how parenthood helped shape her business while sitting down for Mission Driven, a new web-series by Nasdaq.

‘My career as an actress and my goals and what that meant was really who I was prior to having kids,’ she told host Josh Machiz.

‘My life and my priorities and everything that really mattered shifted when I became a mom.’

Elementary: Jessica Alba admitted transitioning from acting to business was ‘pretty easy’ after tackling motherhood while opening up about The Honest Company and more for Mission Driven from Nasdaq

As the type of person to put 100% into everything, Alba admitted: ‘It actually was pretty easy for me to put my energy into something else.’

But still, she realized it was a risk.

‘Now, was it scary? Very,’ Jessica went on.

‘Did I know I was gonna be successful? I didn’t really know but I was gonna try really hard and be relentless in trying to really see if this was something that not just me but other people wanted.’

The Honest Company was inspired by Alba’s own needs as a mother looking for safe and sustainably made household products.

‘I was researching and looking for products for my everyday life from bath and body to my home cleaning products, beauty products, baby products that I could really trust,’ she explained.

‘So when I became a mother for the first time, I was like I just need to make sure that this little person is safe and healthy.’

‘In trying to do so, I guess I realized that there was no real answer out there and the only viable solution was to create a business.’

Since being founded in 2011 the business has soared.

In April 2021, The Honest Company officially filed for an initial public offerings. The company began trading under ticker symbol HNST on May 5, 2021 via the Nasdaq stock exchange.

And Alba has also inspired a new era of ethical consumerism, a ethos which has been embraced by high-profile celebrity companies like Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop and Miranda Kerr’s Kora Organics.

‘There’s always an opportunity to do better,’ she said.

‘There’s always an opportunity to push yourself and applying real human values and ethics whilst building a strong business, they can go hand in hand… You put people’s health and wellbeing and then also think about the planet when building a company that makes products.

‘I really always felt that if you do that and you do it the right way, that the money will come and people will come because it aligns with the values that most people live by.’
