A child is in hospital with serious injuries after reportedly being struck by lightning on a football field in Blackpool. 

Police were called to a football field on School Road following reports a child had been injured. 

They were called shortly after 5.05pm today and officers said enquiries are still ongoing, but it is believed the boy was struck by lightning. 

The boy, whose age has not been released, has serious injuries and has since been taken to hospital. 

A boy is in hospital after reportedly being struck by lightning on a football field in Blackpool after police were called to School Road following reports a child had been injured 

A police spokesman said: ‘We were called shortly after 5.05pm today (Tuesday, May 11) to a football field on School Road, Blackpool, to reports a child had been injured.

‘Although enquiries are still ongoing, at this time we believe the boy has been struck by lightning.

‘He has since been taken to hospital, where he remains with serious injuries.

‘Road closures are currently in place and we would ask that people avoid the area and motorists find alternative routes where possible.

‘Anybody with information about the incident, or who witnessed it and has not yet spoken to police, is asked to get in touch on 101, quoting log 1169 of May 11th.’ 

Police officers and an air ambulance were seen on the football pitches, shortly after a sudden thunderstorm hit the area, the Blackpool Gazette reported. 

A rapid response vehicle, an air ambulance van and four police vans were still at the scene around 6.30pm.
