Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know ties Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road to become the most certified song in American chart history

Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know has made chart history, ten years after it was first released.

The song was just certified 14-times platinum, tying it with Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road for the most certified song in the history of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The news comes just five months after Old Town Road was crowned the most-certified song in music history.

Old Town Road also holds the record for the most consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, after spending nineteen weeks at the top spot.

Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know was first released in Australia in 2011, and took about a month until it reached No. 1 on the ARIA chart.

It took a bit longer to catch fire in the States, but after fifteen weeks inching up the charts it eventually hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 after a huge promotional push that included an American Idol performance and a cover on Glee.

Last year, Gotye was named ARIA’s Australian Artist of the Decade thanks to the success of the song.

The singer and musician, whose real name is Wouter ‘Wally’ De Backer, thanked fans for support and said that he hopes to release new music soon.

‘Sincere thanks to everyone who has listened to and supported my music over the years,’ Gotye said, as reported by The Daily Telegraph.

‘In some ways it feels like Somebody That I Used to Know and Making Mirrors came out more than a decade ago.’

He added: ‘And for anyone who’s wondering – yes, the follow-up album will be released in the next decade. Probably.’
