Penny Lancaster reveals her police uniform left her with ‘sores on her love handles’

She revealed last month that she is officially a qualified police officer after obtaining her City of London police badge.

And Penny Lancaster has revealed the downside to her new role as she admitted that her uniform and armour were so heavy that it left ‘sores on my love handles’. 

Speaking on Tuesday’s Loose Women, the model, 50, also told how her rocker husband Rod Stewart, 76, was ‘anxious’ about her going on the beat [on duty] for the first time.

Joining her fellow panelists Charlene White, Brenda Edwards and Jane Moore, Penny opened up about her first time stepping out as a qualified officer.

Detailing how her uniform left her aching, she said: ‘It is heavy.

‘I got sores on my love handles! It is really heavy.’

She went on: ‘But I got really fit for the mission.You have to make sure you can do the bleep test to a particular level.’

Meanwhile, Penny detailed Rod’s fears for her safety as she started work as an officer, telling how she alleviated his worries by promising she’d call. 

She said: ‘He was anxious of course. Like anyone out on duty, we are putting our lives at risk but for a good cause.

‘I said don’t worry as soon as I am back at the station I will call.’

She continued: ‘Rod is still the rock star I met but he’s seen a lot of change in myself.

‘From turning into a mother of two and then changing career to be a police officer.

‘I couldn’t have gone ahead with that unless I had his support.’  

The mother-of-two went on to discuss her first day of the job and told of both her terror and excitement of getting out on the streets.

She explained: ‘I was in my full armour with another colleague as you work in pairs. 

‘For the first 18 months you are with a colleague.

‘It wasn’t too active out there but the importance is to have that presence and to engage with the public.

‘I was excited but terrified at the same time. But going out there and getting the first duty out the way, I am gaining more confidence.

‘It is about keeping that positive presence on the streets.’

Meanwhile, during the show, the panel debated whether employers should offer menopause leave, with Penny then sharing her own experience with the menopause and how it affected her physically and mentally.

She explained: ‘It started March last year, I didn’t recognise that it was menopause until my period stopped for four years.

‘There was a time when I was being unreasonable which is not like me and having a meltdown, I felt like I was losing my mind. 

‘It was hormones. You’re able to cope with it better once you talk to someone about it.’

It comes after Penny revealed her exciting policing news on Loose Women last month, telling hosts Nadia Sawalha, Jane Moore and Kaye Adams: ‘I finally got my warrant card and a City of London police badge!’

Appearing via videolink for a segment titled ‘PC Penny’, the budding officer looked glamorous in blue shirt as she explained: ‘I was able to finish the court. Me and the specials will be out there [on the streets].’

Penny – who appeared from the luxury living room she shares with her singer husband seemed delighted with the update.

The TV personality explained that she had been lucky enough to get out and celebrate her qualification, now that lockdown measures are being slowly eased.

She told the panel: ‘I was lucky enough to go out twice yesterday lunch with my girlfriends and then another celebration with my husband family and friends.

‘One to celebrate coming out of lockdown, to hear other people’s conversations and I was also celebrating my passing out. I finally got my warrant card and a City of London police badge!’

Discussing her determined nature, Penny continued: ‘When I say I’m going to do something, I’m normally 100% in it, especially with lockdown training and doing lessons over Zoom.

‘But I was able to finish the course. In fact I have a few more lessons to go, but my cohort, and me and the specials will be out there. ‘

Penny’s training for the City of London Police took place on one weeknight every week and from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday every other weekend.
