MasterChef Australia’s Minoli Desilva sent home

MasterChef Australia’s Minoli Desilva sent home after her ‘jarring’ dish left the judges unimpressed

On Sunday’s episode on MasterChef Australia, Minoli Desilva became the fourth contestant to be sent home.

The engineering project manager failed to impress the judges with her sesame-crusted steak with daikon, yuzu dressing, crispy enoki mushrooms and pickled radish.

‘I think, for me, the dish just lacked a little bit of clarity,’ noted guess judge, and fan favourite, Callum Hahn.

‘There’s the making of a good dish there, but I think the thing to tie it together – that yuzu sort of vinaigrette – was maybe not the right sauce for this dish.

Judge Jock Zonfrillo agreed: ‘Yuzu’s a funny thing. You’ve got yuzu as a certain kind of acidity.

‘And it’s really jarring with your pickles. And then you’ve got these two different acidities that are really fighting each other. I can’t taste the beef at all.’

Minoli ultimately found herself in the bottom four, alongside Conor Curran, Maja Veit and Tommy Pham.

‘This challenge was about three things. Number one – designing a dish that would fit on one of these three menus. Number two – make whatever that dish is delicious. Number three – execute it perfectly,’ began judge Andy Allen.

‘While all of you missed one or two of those marks today. Only one dish missed all three. And that dish belonged to Minoli. I’m sorry, Minoli. Today just wasn’t your day.’

‘I’m definitely proud of what I’ve achieved in the short time that I’ve been in the MasterChef kitchen,’ commented Minoli after her eviction.

She added: ‘It was one of the best things that I’ve ever done. It’s given me the confidence that I need.

‘Whatever happens, I’m just going to take everything that I’ve learned and follow my dreams.’

MasterChef continues Monday at 7.30pm on Channel 10.
