Big Brother Australia kicked off its second season season with a controversial love triangle on Monday night.

However, things became rather awkward when now-single Max began flirting with new housemate Christina Podolyan in front of the other housemates.

A montage of footage showed Max and Christina chatting by the pool and playfully throwing food into each other’s mouths in the kitchen.

Speaking to Big Brother about the hunky athlete, Christina said: ‘Max is a really nice guy. He’s easy to talk to.’

‘And really nice looking?’ Big Brother asked.

Christina blushed and giggled, replying: ‘Yeah, OK’.

Former champion sprinter Katie was left seething with jealousy as she watched her former lover cosy up to the stunning brunette flight attendant.

Katie, who dated Max eight years ago, told Big Brother: ‘The dynamic with Max and I is really off at the moment, and I think it’s a little weird to have this… flirtatious relationship that he is creating with Christina.’

‘It is hard for me because I haven’t got to chat with Max because he and Christina are together a lot. You know, we’ve got a lot of history,’ she added.

The chemistry between Max and Christina was also evident to fellow housemates and Renata and Melissa, who were seen discussing the situation on the couch.

‘Listening to Max and Christina, they’re going to be strong together,’ Renata observed.

Luckily for Katie, Max and Christina’s fledging romance was short-lived, as Max was evicted just hours later at this season’s first eviction ceremony.

On Monday, former elite athlete Katie spoke candidly about her relationship with Max during an exclusive interview with Daily Mail Australia on Monday, revealing that they’d dated while competing in the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships many moons ago.

She explained have remained friends after ending their long distance relationship after less than one year.

‘Our teams versed each other. We did long distance, he lived in Queensland and I was in NSW for less than a year,’ she explained.
