Mads Mikkelsen reveals there was almost a kiss between his Hannibal character and Will Graham

Six years after NBC’s beloved but short-lived Hannibal series went off the air, series star Mads Mikkelsen made a rather surprising revelation.

The 55-year-old actor opened up about the beloved series, which ran for three seasons between 2013 and 2015 on NBC, in a new interview with Vulture.

While it didn’t ultimately happen, the Danish actor revealed there was almost a story line where his character Hannibal Lecter and Hugh Dancy’s Will Graham kissed.

The actor revealed that both he, and his co-star Dancy, were up for the characters to become romantic, as they both wanted them to kiss in the Season 3 finale.

‘We actually did a couple of takes of the very last scene where we were looking at each other, and it was a little too obvious — it was almost a kiss,’ Mikkelsen recalled.

‘Me and Hugh were like, “Why not? We have a couple of takes. Let’s do one. It might be cool,”‘ Mikkelsen added.

Still, the kiss never happened, after series creator/showrunner Bryan Fuller chimed in with the final word, despite liking the idea.

‘We never went for the kiss. Bryan loved it, but he was like, “Too much, guys. It’s too obvious.” And he was absolutely right.’

That Season 3 finale ultimately became the series finale, as NBC announced just a few weeks into the season that Hannibal would not return for a fourth season.

Mikkelsen added that he thinks both he and Dancy, ‘were just stuck on that,’ adding many of the show’s devoted fans, known as Fannibals, ‘wanted it as well.’

‘It’s been a subject of homoerotic fan art. And for good reason, because they are so united as twins in many ways,’ Mikkelsen said.

‘But we never wanted it to be a physical thing. It was something much bigger than that,’ he added.

Mikkelsen made headlines last week when he signed on to star in the highly-anticipated Indiana Jones 5, alongside Harrison Ford.

He also signed on in December to replace Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3, after Depp backed out of the role in November.

He can currently be seen in his film Another Round on Hulu, which is up for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, along with Best Director (Thomas Vinterberg).
