First trailer for Catfish UK claims to be even more wild than the US series

The trailer for the British adaptation of hit US reality show Catfish promises it will be ‘even crazier than the American version,’ with ‘serial deception’ and featuring fraudster faking their quest for love and a criminal searching for online romance.

Inspired by the hit US TV show, Catfish UK will air it’s first episode on MTV on April 21 and is hosted by journalists Oobah Butler and Julie Adenuga.

The show sees hopefuls contact the hosts in order to help them meet someone they’ve fallen in love with online, but they often turn out to be someone different to who they claim to be.

The explosive first trailer comes after ten years and eight successful series of the US show, hosted by Nev Schulman and Kamie Crawford. While the original show has seen some people discover their online loves are real – often they aren’t who they say they are with shocking episodes revealing people Catfishing their ex-partners, family members and friends.

Some people have even pretended to be celebrities – including Bow Wow and Katy Perry – while others have been branded ‘serial Catfish’ after appearing on the show multiple times.

And despite the US series being deemed one of the most shocking reality shows of all time, the trailer for the UK show claims the British version will be even more wild.

‘Who’d have thought we’d find something even crazier than the Americans?’ host Julie teases.

The 60 second trailer also shows  Oobah say they’ve stumbled across ‘a criminal not a Catfish,’ while they also ask one hopeful if they’re engaged to their online paramour.

There’s also shots of a tearful person, presumably struggling with heartbreak, who sobs ‘we’re dealing with a serial Catfish’.

Elsewhere, Julie tells a hopeful ‘you’re about to meet your dream girl,’ hinting that some of the romances are successful.

There’s even a cameo from Nev Schulman, who created the original series and has hosted it since the start.

‘Kamie and I are handing over the cameras to Julie and Oobah, it’s time to go fishing in the UK,’ he teases.

Radio and TV presenter Julie who launched Apple Music’s leading radio station Beats 1 said: As someone who has spent the most part of my career in the bubble of music & entertainment, Catfish UK is my first chance to connect with people in a completely different way, which is really exciting for me! The show is about vulnerability, empathy… & drama! Rule #1: Expect the un-expected!

Journalist and author Oobah, who went viral when his online video about a fictional restaurant ‘The Shed at Dulwich’ became the top-rated venue on TripAdvisor added: ‘It’s wild to me that the person who learned about the internet and deception by watching Catfish with his five brothers and sisters gets to be a part of its latest chapter.

‘We live in a moment where everybody’s lives have moved online. I can’t wait to travel around the country, meet people, and use the tools I’ve developed making documentaries, to help them and better understand what it is about society that drives people to feel so inadequate that they cannot be themselves.’

Since announcing the show, British fans have gone wild, with many taking to Twitter to celebrate the news.

During the last year, the UK has seen a rise in filters, finstagrams and faultless deep fakes, meaning the hosts jobs will be as tricky as ever.

It’s the fifth international spin-off of the widely successful series, which has seen versions take place in Colombia, Chile, Brazil and Mexico.

The MTV show began as a spin-off of a 2010 documentary called ‘Catfish’ – created by Nev’s brother Ariel Schulman and his creative partner Henry Joost.

The documentary follows Nev, then 24, and working a photographer to meet Megan, a singer who he’s met online.

But after travelling across country to meet her, he discovers Megan doesn’t exist and instead he’s been talking to a middle-aged housewife who spent most of her days caring for her two severely disabled stepsons and building a web of lies and dozens of fake profiles online.

Talking to Nev, Angela’s husband Vince tells the story of how cod were shipped along with catfish in the same tanks to keep the cod active, and ensure the quality of the fish, and says this is a metaphor on how there are people in everyone’s lives who keep them alert, active, and always thinking, which gives the documentary it’s name.

Two years after the low-budget documentary became a huge success, the Schulman brothers teamed up with MTV to make the show, with Max Joseph co-hosting the show until Kamie Crawford took over in 2020.

In 2014, the term ‘catfish’ was added to the Oxford English dictionary, thanks to the success of the show.

Catfish UK hits your screens this spring, with four 60 minute episodes going out next month and a further six to follow later this year
