And on Tuesday, Rebecca’s ‘husband’ Jake Edwards admitted he was shocked by the 27-year-old’s decision.

‘It was a shock and certainly a surprise because behind the scenes, Beck and I were pretty close leading up to that commitment ceremony,’ Jake, 33 told Today Extra.

‘I was keen to see it right through to the end. We had come so far in the experiment and we worked through a lot together.’

Jake went on to say he and Beck had ‘challenges around affection’ but he had been passionate to make their relationship work.

‘It was difficult, we certainly had a challenge around how intimate we were around each other but I was committed to working on the relationship,’ he explained.

‘Obviously my relationships in the past hadn’t worked out so I wanted to try and work forward and see how I could become a better partner and that’s why I wrote stay.’

During the interview, Jake also spoke about confronting Bryce Ruthven for the way he had treated Beck.

The couples had all sat down for their first dinner during the show’s couples retreat when Bryce, 31, stormed in late and decided to give everyone a piece of his mind.

As he zeroed in on Rebecca, Jake stood up and confronted him, forcing fellow groom Johnny Balbuziente to step in between them.

Jake said: ‘I think the way I handled and responded to it is the way I’d respond to any situation like that in my life away from the experiment.’

‘I don’t regret how I behaved. I stuck up for my values and morals and sticking up for a female in that position as Bryce invaded her space.’
