Easter Treats: Martha Stewart exclusively sat down with DailyMailTV senior correspondent Alicia Quarles to dole out her sweet tips for creative treats for the kids and the secret to creating show-stopping dyed Easter eggs

For small Easter Sunday soirees this year, Martha has concocted a brilliant and fun twist on tradition by transforming hollow chocolate bunnies into something totally new.

‘This is a chocolate Easter bunny,’ Martha explained to Alicia. ‘And I want to turn that into a little special treat for the kids who still drink milk.’

To turn the bunny – which must be one of the hollow ones – into a drinking vessel, Martha uses gentle heat and a metal straw.

‘So, take a metal straw, heat the end … not too long,’ she instructs. ‘This will pierce right into the top. And, see how it went down? Now I have a perfect hole into which I can pour milk.’

‘Then, put in a nice straw – this is a little pink straw – and you can just enjoy a milkshake,’ Stewart said. ‘And then, eat your bunny too. It’s so cute!’

These special sippy cups are perfect for children (or adults with a sweet tooth) and since they’re all individual, they can be enjoyed socially distanced.

This year, Martha crossed continents – figuratively speaking – to find inspiration for Easter’s most beloved pièce de résistance, decorated eggs, with a technique called shibori.

‘Well, this is a Japanese technique,’ she explained, ‘and this is on hard boiled eggs using tape or stickers. And, it’s just sort of unusual and easy to do.’

For people going the more traditional route of dipping hard boiled eggs into an assortment of colorful dyes, the queen of crafting suggests using a simple household pantry ingredient to enhance vibrancy.

‘I put a little bit of white-distilled vinegar into the water. That helps the color be more smooth on the egg,’ she said while demonstrating. ‘Look, you have a beautiful stripe around your egg. So simple!’

To ensure those dyed eggs and chocolate bunnies are displayed artfully, Martha turns to her own Martha Stewart Collection (available at Macys). Stewart took some time to show off some of her favorite items to DailyMailTV and provided some spring tablescape inspiration.

‘Look at these gorgeous plates,’ Martha admired. ‘I want a set of these myself, I have not yet gotten it. I have to remember to do it before they run out of these. We also have gorgeous flatware. All of this is affordable too, because that’s what we always try to do – beauty and practical at a good price.’

For Martha personally, this year her Easter celebration will be small and intimate. After a year in lockdown, working harder than ever from her stunning Bedford estate, Martha has recently been spending time with her grandchildren now that she is vaccinated.

Her granddaughter Jude, 10, seems to be following in the crafting footsteps of her mogul grandmom.

‘Look at these gorgeous bracelets that Jude makes,’ gushed Martha showing off homemade jewelry. ‘She sells these at a local coffee shop. She and her friend Jade.’

In the coming months, Martha said she is looking forward to the pandemic restrictions lifting so she and the grandbabies can travel again.

‘I want to go to Antarctica with the kids,’ she revealed. ‘That will be their seventh continent that they have visited in their short lives – and to my beloved Maine, I can’t wait to get back to Seal Harbor.

• Holding the metal straw at one end, heat the other end with any flame (lighter, gas burner, match) for about 10 seconds

• Place the hot metal straw against the top of the bunny. It should melt a hole very quickly

• Using a funnel, pour milk in the bunny

• Put a festive paper straw in the hole

These treats can be enjoyed by children and even adults with a sweet tooth. The chocolate bunnies themselves can be eaten after the milk as been drunk! Enjoy!
