A hernia usually develops between the chest and hips, and can occur when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the muscle or tissue wall.

It usually causes very few symptoms but can lead to some discomfort.

WHAT IS A HERNIA?

A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue wall.

The lump can often be pushed back in or disappears when you lie down. Coughing or straining may make the lump appear.

See a GP if you think you have a hernia. They may refer you to hospital for surgical treatment, if necessary.

There are 2 main ways surgery for hernias can be carried out:

Open surgery – where a cut is made to allow the surgeon to push the lump back into the tummy

Keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery – this is a less invasive, but more difficult, technique where several smaller cuts are made, allowing the surgeon to use various special instruments to repair the hernia

Most people are able to go home the same day or the day after surgery and make a full recovery within a few weeks.

As well as Charley, Jamie is also father to son Beau, 12, with ex-wife Louise Redknapp.

Last year, Jamie opened up about co-parenting in lockdown admitting that while it wasn’t easy, they ensured their children came first.

He said on the Headliners podcast: It’s never easy but you have to make sure the kids come first and foremost and you make sure that you’re there to support them as much as possible.’

Jamie also praised Louise as a parent and said that she supports their son Charles’ rugby career, he sweetly added: ‘His mum’s brilliant.’

Meanwhile, in an extract from her new book, Louise lamented parenting ‘double standards’ and reflected on how her relationship with her boys has changed since the divorce.

Louise said: ‘When I split up with Jamie, the accusations came in thick and fast. I was so heavily judged, and it amazed me that so many people, including other women, made assumptions about what I was or wasn’t doing when it came to my kids.

‘If I go on holiday with some of my girlfriends, or even just out for a meal in the evening and I’m photographed, it feels like I’m suddenly being seen as a terrible mother.

‘I noticed real double standards: women are simply expected to be with their kids, whereas if fathers spend any time with their children, then suddenly they are ‘Super Dad’ or Dad of the Year.’

Frustrated Louise added that men are made out to be going above and beyond or said to be babysitting when they’re simply looking after their own children.

Making it very clear she’s not criticising her ex, who is a ‘fantastic’ father, Louise wrote that she thinks society needs to adjust its thoughts on parenting and view mums and dads as equals.
