HBO Max had previously issued a pilot order plus an order for five additional scripts back in May 2020.

The original series ran for five seasons between 1986 and 1991, following a laid back teacher named Charlie Moore (Howard Hesseman), who is assigned as a substitute teacher for the Individualized Honors Program at Millard Fillmore High School in New York City.

His unorthodox teaching methods don’t sit with the talented classmates at first, though he ultimately wins them over.

The students were played by a young cast that included Robin Givens in her breakthrough role and Brian Robbins, who would go on to direct films such as Varsity Blues and he currently serves as President of Kids & Family Entertainment at ViacomCBS.

The new series follows Isabella Gomez (One Day At a Time) as Alicia Adams, who tries to show her overachieving students there is more to life than good grades.

Her character is described as, ‘whip-smart, funny, blunt high school teacher we all wish we had.’
